Pour entrer directement dans le vif du sujet, EVENT est un groupe américain à découvrir car avant tout il est capable de pondre des mélodies Power Pop Rock nerveuses et des morceaux plus sentimentaux ornés de refrains aériens imparables. "Scratching At The Surface" peut s'avérer être un régal pour les inconditionnels de STONE TEMPLE PILOTS dont le fantôme se distingue peu ou prou et de façon intermittente au fil des "Make Your Way", "Under My Skin" ou "It Makes Me ... Me", les orientations vocales n'étant jamais très éloignées de celles d'un certain Scott Weiland.
Tout en piochant ça et là quelques directions musicales et tout en conservant un caractère résolument alternatif, EVENT explore des styles assez divers en passant par des sons étranges et Electro sculptés à la manière d'un Trent Treznor ("One Simple Fall") ou par un solo de guitare acoustique ("Into The Fray") qui tombe à point nommé. Il faut reconnaître aux compositions une qualité certaine dont la mise en place est impeccable. Ce deuxième album contient des titres taillés sur mesure pour captiver l'attention de l'auditeur doté de la moindre curiosité. Il est tout de même conseillé de ne pas se contenter d'une seule écoute et de se laisser happer dans chacun de leurs voyages balisés.
Mais on n'écoute pas EVENT comme on écoute les CRANBERRIES, chacun de leurs treize morceaux requiert en effet une disponibilité sensorielle réelle. Ainsi, on assiste à une succession de titres sans jamais mettre en péril l'homogénéité de cet opus haut en couleur. "Scratching At Tha Surface" est bourré de tubes plus efficaces les uns que les autres mais pas encore assez mûr pour s'affranchir totalement des influences aussi anodines qu'elle puissent être. A cette époque teintée de Rock plutôt pâlot, on se doit de gratter la surface de cette musique pour s'apercevoir que EVENT est un groupe ambitieux et talentueux. Et il y a fort à parier qu'en laissant leur personnalité s'affirmer plus franchement, ce groupe éclate au grand jour.
