Si comme moi vous avez le nez bouché, vous allez être emmerdés pour la suite. Si non, sentez-vous cette odeur de malt ? Voyez-vous cette couleur ambrée ? Une petite lichette vous tenterait bien, pas vrai ? Seulement, pas de chance, les gars de VIKING SKULL sont passés avant vous et n’ont rien laissé, les chacals.
Contrairement à ce que pourrais laisser supposer leur nom, on ne va pas avoir le droit à la traversée des étendues salées nordiques à la mode TURISAS. Non, VIKING SKULL, c’est plus pragmatique, terre à terre. Ça sent l’huile de vidange, les femmes et la boisson. Et c’est là pour botter des culs.
Dés les premières notes de « Start A War », on a l’impression de se retrouver à l’époque de TANK et son « The War Drags Ever On ». C’est simple, direct, mais la droite étant le plus court chemin pour atteindre son but, ça fonctionne. « Doom, Gloom, Heartache & Whiskey » est une chanson lourde (que me chantait ma maman), avec un riff franchement pas bien technique mais vraiment bien foutu. On bouge la tête en rythme, on s’imagine déjà à leur concert et on prend son pied sur le changement de tempo qui intervient vers la fin. « Shot Down » se permet des arpèges de début qui sont joué sans trop se soucier des cordes qui frisent pour ensuite entrer dans le vif du sujet. C’est toujours très Heavy à l’ancienne mode mais aussi entrainant que « In Hell ». Presque chaque titre a son charme et son intérêt. C’est toujours d’une grande sobriété (dans les riffs, pas dans les gosiers des musiciens) mais ça va où ça veut aller. Le seul morceau en dessous dans cet album est le dernier : « Drink ». On se retrouve face à un blues joué au piano avec des mecs qu’on pressent bourrés tout autour et qui essayent de faire un truc potable. Même si l’idée est marrante de prime abord, le morceau dure prêt de sept minutes et lasse sur la fin. Surtout pour entendre un mec dire qu’il est bourré ; ça, on s’en serait douté. Cependant, ce titre ne gâche pas le plaisir du reste de l’écoute.
VIKING SKULL signe donc ici un pur disque Stoner qui s’écoute et s’écoute encore. Old, c’est une certitude, démodé, pas le moins du monde.
