NIFLHEIM (FRA) - Once Upon A Cow (2008)

Après Lost In Brocéliande, voici que le groupe NIFLHEIM revient avec une deuxième démo, Once Upon A Cow. Mais plus qu’une « simple » deuxième démo, elle semble marquer un tournant pour NIFLHEIM, sorte de point sur le chemin déjà parcouru et visée pour l’avenir. D’ailleurs, en plus des trois titres qui composent à proprement parlé Once Upon A Cow, ce disque reprend aussi les cinq titres de Lost In Brocéliande. C’est d’ailleurs par là que nous allons commencer.
Sur les morceaux qui composent cette première démo, NIFLHEIM fait déjà preuve d’une volonté de marquer le coup dés le début. Le groupe ose donc des morceaux complexes et ambitieux pour un jeune groupe. Cependant, les morceaux semblent hésiter entre une direction épique à tendance progressive et une autre plus folklorique. Le mélange des deux donne quelque chose de réussit mais les claviers occupent une place très (trop ?) importante par rapport aux cordes. Cela donne une puissance certaine et les orchestrations sont bonnes, mais on est loin d’un Folk Metal qui plonge ses racines dans quelque chose de plus authentique. Pourtant, je le disais, les morceaux ne sont pas mauvais, « Lost In Brocéliande » est même un bon morceau.
Après des changements de line up et une remise en question sur le futur, Once Upon A Cow arrive. Exit les claviers. Un violoncelle vient s’ajouter au groupe, ainsi que des percussions, tenues par l’ancien batteur. Et là, oui, on est plus dans la dimension Folk revendiquée par le groupe. J’avoue aussi que le groupe m’a pris à contre-pied. Je m’attendais à une forte utilisation du violon et du violoncelle mais on ne les sent pas autant que je l’aurais cru. Tout simplement parce qu’il n’est pas rare que les deux cordes suivent les guitares pour donner un son très intéressant pour les riffs. J’ai mis un peu de temps à m’y faire, parce qu’on est plus habitué aux cordes comme ensemble mélodique soutenu par des guitares rythmiques puissantes. Mais finalement, avec ce parti pris, NIFLHEIM semble avoir trouvé sa voie originale. Les morceaux ont aussi évolué vers une composition un peu plus directe et les solos sont plus ou moins passés à la trappe. Même si Lost In Brocéliande m’a plu, je trouve que le groupe tire plus son épingle du jeu avec Once Upon A Cow. Après, c’est une question de goût. Mais « Thorgunnr's Tale » et son refrain restent longtemps dans les têtes, preuve que le groupe sait toucher sa cible.
En tous cas les huit musiciens amorcent une direction pour le combo qu’il faudra suivre dans le futur. En espérant voir bientôt surgir un album de la même qualité.
