PILEDRIVER !!! A l’évocation du nom de ce groupe, je me suis replongé en … 1972, année de l’enregistrement par STATUS QUO de l’album Piledriver. Sonne déjà à mes oreilles un bon vieux Boogie Rock…à chacun sa madeleine de Proust. L’écoute de Mojo Hand de PILEDRIVER va t-il répondre à ces échos ?
Depuis plus de quinze ans sous divers line-ups, PILEDRIVER, groupe originaire de Limoges, produit une musique résolument rock très influencée par les groupes des seventies. C’est également plus de 700 concerts et des premières parties prestigieuses (ALVIN LEE, NASHVILLE PUSSY, BLUE OYSTER CULT, rien que ça…).
Ecoutons… Le ton est donné avec l’intro de « Never Gonna Change » et les titres « Catch Your Own Wave », « How Could I Hide ». Le titre éponyme « Mojo Hand » est une alchimie des ambiances déclinées au travers des autres titres de l’album. A remarquer le très acédécien « Trash Can Town », PILEDRIVER, décidément, ne renie pas ses origines ni ses influences.
Parfois la guitare de Janeck se fait plus langoureuse, bluesy comme sur « Misty Morning », on peut même inviter sa petite amie à danser sur « Let It Flow ». Sur « Mystery Tune », je me suis surpris à reconnaître quelques notes geignardes guitaresques de « I’am a man » du CHICAGO….sans les cuivres. Le jeu se fait plus carré et pêchu dans « One Night Stand ». Et on tape des pieds… « Mirage » clôt l’album sur un instrumental faisant la part belle au guitar hero, avec une ghost track…espiègles jusqu’au bout les PILEDRIVER.
Et comme disait Francis Rossi avant la sortie de Piledriver en septembre 1972 : « la seule façon d’enregistrer un album est d’allumer les amplis et de jouer comme en concert ». Là, pour Mojo Hand de PILEDRIVER, j’aurais bien aimé…mais le studio n’était alimenté que par du 110 volts, et on a évité le court-circuit…dommage. (La vaisselle en porcelaine de Limoges de mémé n’avait rien à craindre).
Le tout est toutefois très estampillé et résolument seventies, pour les nostalgiques donc.
