Sur un marché saturé, comment peut-on encore sortir des albums avec une production aussi pourrie et espérer vendre ? Je ne parle pas ici de l’aspect mercantile – même si c’est un incontournable et un label doit vendre pour continuer à vivre et faire découvrir de nouveaux talents – mais de la simple réponse à une attente, disons légitime, de la part de l’amateur de Metal que nous sommes. Car c’est un fait : ce Mandatory Evac sonne comme une démo, et pas de celles du haut de panier, avec de réelles lacunes au niveau des basses et de la réverb. Pourtant, le groupe n’existe pas d’hier : après avoir quitté le Brésil et atterri aux Etats-Unis, les frères Howard fondent INCUBUS en 1986. Deux albums, puis quasiment dix ans de silence. La formation ressort de l’ombre pour une troisième offrande, Discerning Forces, sous le patronyme de OPPROBRIUM, puis nouvelle et rapide remise en sommeil avant la sortie de Mandatory Evac. Nos deux acolytes pratiquent un Death Thrash old school qui évoque le KREATOR des débuts, mais dont l’agressivité et l’intérêt que l’on peut y porter sont réellement handicapés par la production. Et on ne peut que le regretter lorsque l’on écoute « No One At My Funeral » ou « Mandotary Evac » ou encore « Sports Of Danger ». Pas de fioriture sur ces treize compos, mais la succession de titres ne dépassant que rarement les trois minutes n’invite pas à l’enthousiasme et laisse un goût d’inachevé. Cela s’en ressent particulièrement au niveau des leads qui n’ont bien souvent de lead que le nom (« Never Found »)…
Mais il est à croire qu’OPPROBRIUM, après être pourtant passé par les Morrisound Studios et Nuclear Blast, se complaise dans l’underground : la pochette elle-même est à l’image de la production, simpliste. Convient-il alors de saluer l’authenticité de la démarche ? Rien n’est moins sûr, car le rendu n’est pas corrosif ni sulfureux, mais tout simplement mauvais. L’underground, c’est bien, mais arrêtez de creuser les gars : vous avez atteint le fond…
