THERAPY? est un groupe auquel on avait essayé de me convertir dans leurs années fastes, c'est-à-dire au temps des dinosaures pour les plus jeunes d’entre vous. Cependant, rien ne m’avait réellement accroché. Peut-être un riff ou deux, mais pas plus. Il manquait quelque chose pour que mon oreille se satisfasse de leur écoute. Pourtant, THERAPY? est quand même un groupe qui, avec Crooked Timber, sort son treizième album. Il y a donc de quoi se poser des questions sur une telle longévité. Du coup, j’ai voulu retester, voir s’il y avait un petit machin quelque part pour m’interpeller après de si longues années. La réponse est clairement non, pas vraiment.
Dés le début, on se retrouve face à un mur de basse qui vrombit tant et plus, ce qui risque évidemment de déstabiliser ceux qui sont plus habitué à une section mélodique mise en avant. Pourtant, cela pourrait passer… s’il y avait bien une section mélodique derrière. Mais elle semble être réduite à sa plus simple expression. Des guitares faiblardes en arrière plan avec un son qui est trop propre ou pas assez selon d’où on se situe dans l’approche de la distorsion, une voix qui donne parfois l’impression qu’Andy Cairns s’ennuie et veut faire passer son sentiment par le micro, tout cela ne motive pas pour poursuivre l’écoute. Il y a bien deux ou trois interventions qui font tendre l’oreille, comme le morceau « Exiles », mais cela ne suffit à remonter l’ensemble. De plus, il semble que le groupe ait voulu en faire un peu trop. En effet, les morceaux défilent et semblent s’arrêter… pour reprendre de plus belle dans une portion de titre largement dispensable. Et je ne parle même pas de l’interminable « Magic Mountain », un morceau de près de dix minutes qui use et abuse des même schémas sans presque aucune variation. J’aime bien les morceaux longs quand ils sont justifiés. Là, c’est juste chiant au possible. Et qu’on ne me parle pas de Progressif, il n’y en a pas une once sur cette plage.
Avec une intention aussi minimaliste, je pense que le groupe aurait dû jouer cette carte à fond et faire des morceaux beaucoup plus courts. Cela serait très bien passé et aurait donné un album qui, sans être génial, aurait été plaisant. Là, cela donne un album dont on a souvent envie de s’échapper parce qu’il devient lassant.
