Sixième album studio pour les Scandinaves de STEEL ATTACK et une chose est sûre, ce n’est pas ce Carpe DiEnd qui leur donnera accès à la route du succès. Les Suédois donnent dans un Heavy Metal sombre en assénant l’auditeur de gros riffs saccadés qui, après l’euphorie de départ, finissent par gaver. A la fin du disque, il est très difficile de supporter ces rythmiques spasmodiques après les avoir mangées à toutes les sauces durant les 48 minutes de Carpe DiEnd. Et c’est là tout le problème de cet album. STEEL ATTACK n’a de cesse de répéter cette façon de jouer hachée qui finit par épuiser son acquéreur. Pourtant, l’idée était bonne et intéressante, mais uniquement à petite dose.
Néanmoins, il ne faut pas pour autant annihiler le travail de composition et d’arrangements car en général, le disque tient la route. Agressif à souhait, mélodique sans en abuser, les morceaux qui composent Carpe DiEnd sont tous du même acabit, ce qui donne aussi un aspect compact à la galette. Même s’il est difficile d’en trouver un qui se démarque plus qu’un autre, on peut mettre l’accent sur la mise en bouche qu’est « The Evil In Me » ou encore sur le Heavy et tonitruant « For Whom I Bleed ? ». Pour ce qui est du reste, ça ne casse pas non plus trois pattes à un canard. Carpe DiEnd n’est pas un album qui tournera en boucle dans votre platine car trop éloigné de la surprise du premier effort Where Mankind Failed.
Par contre, zéro pointé pour le label qui a ruiné ce CD promo en le gavant de coupures intempestives pour préciser que j’étais en train d’écouter un album qui se trouve être la propriété de Massacre Record. Une interruption par titre se comprend, mais trois ou quatre, ça fait un peu beaucoup et on a du mal à rester concentré sur le contenu. Et après ça, les labels râlent de ne pas voir les disques de leurs groupes chroniqués ! C’est à se demander pourquoi ?
