Alors que leur premier véritable album sort en ce début 2009, il ne faut pas oublier pour autant les débuts de MINDLAG PROJECT avec Karybda, en 2002. Le groupe proposait alors sa première démo et démontrait (logique pour une démo !) leur attirance pour le malsain à travers une musique qui, sur des bases Thrash et Hardcore bien balisées, dégoulinait vers l’impur. Tantôt plus Thrash que Hardcore, tantôt plus Hardcore que Thrash, le mélange est toujours bien présent mais les morceaux ne sont pas tous du même acabit. Ainsi, on prendra son pied sur « En Tu Cara ! » et « Serve The Noise », deux des morceaux les plus inspirés de la démo même s’ils sont construit de manière différentes. Le premier introduit bien le concept du groupe malgré un relatif classicisme mais possède une réelle rage tandis que le deuxième et son mélange de voix et qui se termine en apocalypse auditive nous donne envie d’en remettre une couche. Par contre « Erreur Divine » m’a laissé froid. Peut-être que la volonté de décalage d’esprit du groupe ne suffit pas ici pour prendre le dessus sur les constructions qui sont tout de même assez basiques et déjà vues. Le groupe s’essaye parfois à insérer des passages plus calmes, avec guitares sans distorsion, dans leurs morceaux (« Serve The Noise »), mais ces passages ne sont pas suffisamment bien amenés pour qu’ils apportent quelque chose de réellement intéressant. Par contre, la voix de Mathieu sait varier dans les tons Death ou Hardcore pour ne pas rester monotone. On peut aussi noter quelques moments plus porcins (« Addiction »). Au niveau originalité des riffs, « Mindlag » prend le dessus. Ce n’est pas renversant non plus, mais ça joue un peu plus la carte de la cassure avec le Thrash.
MINDLAG PROJECT a dû évoluer depuis Karybda. Mais cette démo nous permet de mettre les premiers orteils dans leur univers. Bientôt, on y risquera la jambe entière.
