Si vous n'avez pas encore fait connaissance avec Rob Rock, voici une excellente occasion de se rattraper. Enregistré le 27 Septembre 2008 à Atlanta, ce concert fait l'objet aujourd'hui d'une sortie en CD et DVD. Le père Rob n'étant pas un showman excentrique à la David Lee Roth, l'image ne manque pas trop au moment de chroniquer simplement la bande-son. D'autant que, comme le dit Chris Impellitteri lui-même (Rob fut le chanteur historique d'IMPELLITTERI, le groupe), Rob Rock est capable de chanter aussi bien sur scène qu'en studio. Ce qui n'est pas donné à tout le monde.
Et effectivement, on constate que les envolées vocales et les parties les plus lyriques ne posent aucun soucis à notre "chanteur chrétien" auto-proclamé "Voix du Metal mélodique". Mouais, un peu vantard, tout ça, mais bon admettons quand même qu'aucune fausse note ou grosse plantade ne figure sur cette galette live. A la limite ça pourrait sentir le concert trafiqué en studio ensuite, mais malgré tout on sent qu'on tient entre les mains un objet sincère et peu retouché. D'autant que les Carl-Johan Grimmack (guitares, NARNIA), Peter Halgren (guitares), Andreas Passmark (bass, NARNIA aussi) et Tracy Shell peuvent se féliciter d'une interprétation sans faille.
Et donc, comme je vous le disais, rien de mieux que ce "best of live" pour enfin découvrir Rob Rock. Les morceaux choisis proviennent de ses quatre albums solo, de Rage Of Creation à l'extraordinaire Holy Hell, en passant par Eyes Of Eternity (seulement 1 titre) et le dernier en date Garden Of Chaos. Ceci étant dit, 5 titres extraits de Garden Of Chaos, voilà qui fait beaucoup pour un Live In Atlanta composé de 11 chansons, surtout que manque cruellement à l'appel le prodigieux "Calling Angels" (Holy Hell). Et puis on aurait aimé entendre au moins un titre du fameux M.A.R.S. Project, dans lequel Rob était associé à Tommy Aldridge, Rudy Sarzo et Tony McAlpine ...
Mais ne boudons pas notre plaisir, car Rob Rock possède dans sa féconde discographie des titres imparables de Power Metal mélodique, comme "Savior's Call" ou "I'm A Warrior". Et même si "Judgment Day" sonne un peu daté, comme une pâle copie d'un MAIDEN peu inspiré, le reste du concert se résume en une série de rythmiques incisives sur lesquelles se pose la superbe voix de Rob. On y entend du Speed Metal avec "Rock The Earth", du Metal accrocheur typé AOR avec "This Time Is The Last Time", des titres qui passent aisément l'épreuve du live, comme ce "Only A Matter Of Time" et son déluge de soli qui permettent aux deux gratteux de s'exprimer à loisir. Et surtout, oui surtout, ce morceau d'anthologie nommé "In The Night", Heavy à souhait, interminable et pourtant terriblement efficace !
De ce Live In Atlanta on peut cependant formuler deux regrets. Le premier, c'est qu'à force de sortir des disques hyper produits au son absolument énorme, certaines chansons finissent immanquablement par manquer de patate par rapport à leur version studio, ce que l'on note particulièrement sur "Slayer Of Souls" et "I'm A Warrior". Et l'autre regret concerne le public, qui se déchaîne un peu tard, c'est à dire en fin de set, alors que certaines lignes de chant sont propices à être reprises en choeur. Peut-être que Rob et ses copains ne savent pas y faire pour exciter la foule. Pour vérifier ça, il faudrait voir le DVD ...
