On dit souvent que la qualité première d’un bon barman est d’être sobre. C’est peut-être la raison pour laquelle les mecs de SWORN ENEMY ne se retrouveront probablement jamais de l’autre côté du comptoir. Entre les clichés promotionnels où le combo est réuni en festoyant autour d’un doux breuvage houblonné et le titre de leur dernier enfantement, il y’a plus de chance de les retrouver vomissant dans la rigole qu’au pieu à noircir des grilles de sudoku. Total World Domination ! Voilà qui en impose. C’est d’ailleurs tout ce qu’on leur souhaite après trois albums qui, à défaut d’avoir totalement modulés la scène HxC new-yorkaise, nous avaient quand même sacrément endoloris les fessiers. Je pense surtout à leur petit dernier, Maniacal à qui il ne manquait pas grand-chose pour nous fracturer le coccyx. Vous aurez donc compris que si les boîtes crâniennes des américains ne pèsent pas bien lourd à l’autopsie, ce n’est pas le plus grand des drames car leur musique, savant mélange de Thrash Metal, Hardcore et Crossover est intéressante.
Par contre, gros problème : la domination met beaucoup de temps à se mettre en place. Autant dire que sur les trois premières compositions, si j’ai reconnu la griffe SWORN ENEMY avec ces guitares très saccadées, je me suis aussi sacrément emmerdé. Entre « Sell Your Soul », Aftermath » et « Run For Shelter », il n’y en a pas une pour te retourner le cerveau comme ils l’avaient fait dans le passé. Finalement, c’est « Still Hating » qui renverse la vapeur. Comme son nom l’indique, ils ont toujours la haine. Ça tombe bien, ça répond en même temps à ma question. Je dois dire avoir été conquis par ce refrain guerrier tout en retenue sur la batterie. Et le redressement se poursuit avec « Lies » où les cordes ne me sont jamais apparues aussi Thrash. Un solo à sa place au cœur du morceau, c’est de bon augure. Je retrouve un peu les new-yorkais qui m’avaient bluffés il y’a à peine un an et les vocaux si particuliers de Sal Lococo. A l’évidence, ce monsieur sait ce qu’est le Hardcore, le vrai, le dur, le pur ! Son timbre, reconnaissable entre mille à gagné en puissance et intensité. Alors quand il est doublé sur les refrains par ses camarades de jeu, il nous offre des aires mémorables et mémorisables comme sur l’hymne ; « Ready To Fight ». Cependant, plus on avance dans le temps, plus on se rend compte que ce Total World Domination est une régression par rapport à Maniacal. La reprise de « All Fucked Up » de BLOOD FOR BLOOD est l’arbre qui cache la forêt. Elle est placée au cœur d’une série creuse destructrice qui s’étend de « Disconnect » à « Home Of The Brave ». Seule « Step In The Ring » reste potable grâce à son tempo groovy dans la ritournelle et ce, en dépit d’un sample final idiot qui entache un tiers de la piste. C’est trop flagrant : l’inspiration s’est envolée sur la fin au point qu’on attend le silence avec impatience tant il n’y a plus rien de substantiel à tirer de cet opus. La cover en elle-même n’est pas mauvaise. Je ne sais pas à quoi ressemble l’original mais il est évident que cette composition ne venait pas de SWORN ENEMY. La variation rythmique est trop importante et le choix de faire une reprise d’un groupe de Hardcore quand on est un groupe de Hardcore est discutable.
Ce sont finalement des choix contestables qui plombent cette nouvelle sortie. Les américains nous avaient pourtant prouvé dans le passé leur capacité à faire de grosses tueries. Entre temps, il y’a du avoir un crash économique trop important dans le marché du melon, car le leur semble être devenu énorme. Total World Domination ? Pourquoi pas mais je vous propose d’abord de revoir vos intentions à la baisse…
