DEADSTAR (FRA) - The Hook Killer (2009)

DEADSTAR, projet instrumental né de la créativité de François Pouvreau, avait déjà sorti une première démo intitulée Moonlight (en Août 2008). The Hook Killer, deuxième démo de DEADSTAR, révèle un peu plus les ambitions de son géniteur. Assurément, le compositeur de DEADSTAR pourrait intégrer n’importe quel groupe de Black symphonique à la recherche d’un clavier doué de ses doigts. Mais il voit plus loin. Beaucoup plus loin. Comme votre serviteur, il doit vouer une passion peu commune aux musiques de films. Aux petits détails sonores qui suscitent l’intrigue, aux mélodies ensorceleuses, aux orchestrations sombres qui font de l’homme chauve-souris un Chevalier Noir énigmatique et torturé (il fallait bien que je la case celle-là : Hans, tu es un génie).
En cela, je dois admettre que le concept de The Hook Killer m’a facilement séduit, d’où une chronique forcément subjective et une note finale qui ne signifiera pas grand-chose … D’autant que cette démo pousse le concept jusqu’à réécrire la trame musicale d’un film déjà sorti. Le « tueur au crochet », voilà un titre qui m’évoquait bien quelque chose. La pochette, elle, en apprend un peu plus sur le contenu. Ce visage si pur que vous découvrez, c’est celui de la belle, très belle Virginia Madsen (oui, la sœur de Michael, celui qui joue toujours les truands costauds au cœur tendre chez Tarantino). Et le « tueur au crochet » est plus connu sous le nom de Candyman.
« Candyman » (1992) ne représente ni plus ni moins que LE film culte d’épouvante des années 90. Réalisé par Bernard Rose, d’après une nouvelle du géant (par le talent) Clive Barker, cette légende urbaine portée à l’écran met en scène une journaliste, Helen, qui enquête sur le terrifiant tueur au crochet (joué par le non moins terrifiant Tony Todd). Il ne faut surtout pas jouer à prononcer 5 fois son nom devant un miroir, sinon … malheur à vous …
Le succès du film doit aussi à la bande-son de Philip Glass, illustre compositeur de musique contemporaine et de nombreuses musiques cinématographiques (« The Truman Show », c’est lui). Et François Pouvreau revendique ouvertement l’influence de Glass. Tel l’élève imitant son maître, le cerveau de DEADSTAR démontre que lui aussi sait instaurer un climat plus qu’horrifique …
D’une ambiance menaçante jusqu’aux instants les plus dramatiques et funèbres (« Saviour Of The City »), d’un orgue oppressant jusqu’aux terreurs les plus insupportables (« Act 4 – The Second Apparition », et il faut entendre cette voix malsaine prononcer « you are mine now » !), d’une berceuse inquiétante jusqu’à la triste mélodie d’un piano envoûtant (« I Came For You »), The Hook Killer offre sa propre version de la B.O. de « Candyman », glissant à de nombreuses reprises des extraits de dialogues du film.
Bien sûr, sur 18 minutes, certains diront que The Hook Killer ne présente pas assez de compositions dénuées de dialogues. Ils auront sûrement raison. Mais c’est justement le travail en fond sonore qu’il faut apprécier. Plus besoin d’image, la musique se suffit à elle-même.
Et maintenant, l’étape suivante pour DEADSTAR consiste à sortir un album entier de créations originales. Et de les proposer, pourquoi pas, à un réalisateur audacieux qui saura donner sa chance à un talentueux musicien.
