Il y a encore quelques temps, concernant la discographie de ARTILLERY, j’aurais pu, sarcastique, vous dire que vous la trouveriez, non pas chez les traditionnels bons disquaires, mais plutôt antiquaires. En effet, après avoir marqué les premières heures du Thrash européen au milieu des années 1980 avec des albums tels que Fear of Tomorrow, Terror Squad ou encore By Inheritance, les Danois en connurent aussi les heurs, aboutissant à un split en 1991. Tentative de retour gagnant avec B.A.C. K. en 1999 : malheureusement, même si la qualité des compos n’était pas en cause, il manqua au groupe ce petit plus qui lui aurait alors donné envie de continuer. Dix ans se sont écoulés et voilà de nouveau ARTILLERY avec un nouvel album, When Death Comes, et une chose est sûre : la bande des frères Stützer est en forme. When Death Comes nous replonge vigoureusement dans les années 1980, comme si le temps s’était arrêté, comme si ARTILLERY n’avait pas pris une ride, comme si la scène Metal n’avait pas subi une attaque de Core qui donne encore de l’urticaire à certains… Même le nouveau vocaliste, Søren Adamsen, au registre plus étendu que celui de son prédécesseur, a ressorti du placard ses vieilles baskets trouées… Cette transition entre l’ancien et le nouveau ARTILLERY, qui ne fait d’ailleurs qu’un, est assurée par la reprise, avec quelques arrangements, de Uniform, et ses touches orientales qui ne sont pas sans évoquer MELECHESH, et la ballade Delusions Of Grandeur, qui figuraient sur leur démo The Mind Factory (1991). Le Thrash pratiqué par la formation n’est pas hystérique ni même violent, mais maîtrisé et énergétique : on retrouve certes des titres consacrés à la critique de la religion (« Damned Religion »), mais l’on reste bien loin de la démarche blasphématoire et provocante d’un SLAYER. Pour ce qui est du jeu des guitares, celui-ci s’avère d’autant plus appréciable et remarquable que la mode, même si l’on y revient, n’est plus aux soli décomplexés. C'est dire que si l’on se réfère au titre de cet opus, si la mort devait arriver, celle-ci serait nettement prématurée et ce serait bien dommage…
