Je ne voulais pas le dire mais devant le manque d’inspiration horrible qui m’envahit à l’aube de rédiger cette chronique, la seule chose qui me parait déjà judicieux de souligner est que SALTATIO MORTIS est l’archétype même du groupe qui, avant même de l’avoir écouté, me donne envie de retourner sous la couette. La vue des nombreux instruments exotiques qui fonctionnent à la force hydraulique et éolienne utilisés par ces allemands me donne envie de dormir. Cornemuse, chalemie, didgeridoo, Chapman stick, biniou, vielle à roue, cithare… ne cherchez plus les auteurs du casse au musée national du Moyen-Age… Bon, au-delà de ces quelques idées reçues, les teutons restent une référence en matière de Rock médiéval et partagent la gloire avec leurs compatriotes d’HAGGARD. Ce Wer Wind Sät est mine de rien leur septième ode à la nature et au temps où les cerfs étaient bien plus que des bêtes sauvages cornues.
Pour commencer, je déconseille fortement cette œuvre aux réfractaires de la langue de Goethe, parce que vous allez en bouffer des « ach ! », des « scheiss ! », des « traurigkeit ! ». Derrière sa petite mèche rouge, Herr Alea Der Bescheidene tient le micro avec assez peu de sureté. Est-il frigide ? C’est étrange car même en n’étant pas forcément fan de SALTATIO MORTIS, les quelques rares compos que j’avais écouté m’avaient fait bien meilleure impression. Car aussi festif soit-il, ce Rock là est quand même sacrément caricatural et soporifique ! Les instruments Folk sont utilisés avec trop de conviction et relèguent les guitares au dernier rang ! Les riffs en deviennent inoffensifs, comme des babils enfantins. Sur l’ensemble des morceaux, je n’ai trouvé que quatre motifs susceptibles de vous faire lever le nez de votre grille de Sudoku. La présence de la « Metal Königin », Doro Pesch sur « Salome ». Bien sur, elle fait ici de la figuration sur un titre aux intonations orientales mais sa participation, médiocre, certes, reste à souligner. Puis SALTATIO MORTIS parvient à nous décrocher un sourire avec « La Jument De Michao » (qu’on connaît mieux sous le nom de « Le Loup, Le Renard et la Belette »). Cette reprise un peu plus hard du tube de TRI YANN a été effectuée dans un excellent esprit et reste fidèle à l’esprit breton de la chanson. Par ailleurs, nos amis ont fait l’effort de garder les paroles originelles, ce qui vaudra un rictus pour les plus sérieux et une crise de rire pour les défoncés. Alea n’aurait pas du sécher les cours de français… Les derniers motifs de satisfaction se nomment « Rastlos » (ou Bono et ses potes qui enfilent un kilt, c’est selon) et « Wir Säen Den Wind » qui, elle aussi s’inscrit dans une veine beaucoup plus Rock & Roll. Paradoxalement, c’est là où les ambiances folkloriques et dansantes sont les moins flagrantes qu’on s’amuse le plus…
Pour le reste, Wer Wind Sät reste une grande déception, d’autant que SALTATIO MORTIS est un nom assez familier dans la grande fratrie du Rock/Metal. Je crois que les allemands ont tout simplement fait le tour de leur propre personnage. Et les quelques tours de passe-passe comme les invités de choix (Doro) ou les reprises ne feront que jeter un peu de poudre et de paillettes aux yeux des derniers pouilleux nostalgiques du système féodal… ma foi depuis fort longtemps révolu !
