Seulement trois albums au compteur et déjà le statut de groupe culte. Alors que HOLLENTHON a fait son grand retour l’an dernier avec l’excellent Opus Magnum, le quatuor autrichien décide de battre le fer tant qu’il est encore chaud. D’où cet EP bienvenu et nommé Tyrants And Wraiths. Et après un Opus Magnum d’une richesse indéfinissable, ce nouveau mini-CD n’arrange pas les affaires du chroniqueur qui doit classer HOLLENTHON dans une catégorie musicale : Black ou Death Metal ? Metal épique ou symphonique ?
Pourtant, en 4 titres et 20 minutes, on prend encore une fois une grosse baffe et rien ne saurait mieux définir le cru HOLLENTHON 2009. Il n’y a pas titre plus approprié que « Tyrants And Wraiths » pour exprimer la terrible soif de conquêtes sanglantes qui habite les sombres tyrans. Ce Metal extrême majestueux, mené de main de maître par l’excellent batteur Mike Gröger, agrémenté d’harmoniques (ces sonorités si chères à MACHINE HEAD), de soli hystériques et de chœurs encore une fois très travaillés, a tout pour réveiller vos pulsions de grandeur destructrice. Les « Innocent Sin » (plus rapide, plus technique, plus osé avec son orgue inattendu) et « Deathly Dirges » (imposant et oppressant) sont dans la même veine.
Un bémol toutefois en ce qui concerne « Of Hollow Men » : Martin Schirenc tente de chanter en voix claire (il chante juste, cela dit), mais HOLLENTHON s’éloigne trop rapidement de son style de prédilection. Progresser c’est bien … mais là on croirait vraiment un groupe de Prog’ !
La plage multimédia de Tyrants And Wraiths nous offre deux clips live issus du Graspop Metal Meeting de 2008, « On The Wings Of A Dove » (excellent) et « Ars Moriendi », deux morceaux issus de Opus Magnum. Un constat s’impose : même si HOLLENTHON a recours à des bandes préenregistrées pour reproduire les parties orchestrales, sa musique passe avec succès l’épreuve de la scène et le quatuor livre une prestation très carrée. Et ça fait toujours bizarre de voir son leader jouer du Death Metal sur une Telecaster (vous savez, la guitare de Keith Richards des STONES !).
Voilà vraiment un Mini-CD qui remplit bien son rôle : nous faire patienter jusqu’au prochain album.
Qui arrivera dans pas trop longtemps, du moins on espère.
