Alors là voilà donc, la nouvelle sensation de Power-Metal-mélodico-symphonique-avec-une-chanteuse-qui-va-faire-un-carton-et-que-oui-vous-allez-trop-aimer-car-moi-je-kiffe …. Mais qu’est ce qui peut bien provoquer toute cette effervescence autour de HOLYHELL ?
En cherchant un peu plus, et notamment dans les crédits de ce premier album, on comprend tout de suite mieux. D’ailleurs, ça fait un peu super-production hollywoodienne, du genre :
Joey DeMaio, l’homme qui est prêt à mourir pour le Metal, présente …

Oh putain alors là c’est le scoop ! Je vous épargne les détails supplémentaires, comme par exemple le fait que Rhino (batteur de MANOWAR sur The Triumph Of Steel en 1992) fasse partie du combo, ou encore que Ken Kelly se soit chargé des illustrations … En bref, ça pue. On a beau avoir entre les mains un très beau CD tout noir comme le slip de Domenech pendant les prolongations contre l’Irlande, franchement d’entrée de jeu (d’ailleurs, il faudra nous parler du jeu, un jour, Raymond …), ce HolyHell n’inspire pas confiance.
Comment ne pas penser qu’après l’imbroglio RHAPSODY OF FIRE, le père DeMaio ne tente pas de nous fourguer son nouveau poulain monté de toutes pièces ? « Oh et si je montais, spécialement pour Magic Circle Music, un groupe qui synthétiserait à lui tout seul MANOWAR, RHAPSODY OF FIRE et toute cette vague de Metal à chanteuses qui marche fort en Europe ? Oui, je peux le faire, car je suis fort, je suis Joey DeMaio, et je suis prêt à mourir pour le Metal. »
Enfin, là, c’est plutôt HOLYHELL qui va mourir. Avant même d’être né. Et ce même si HOLYHELL empreinte aux immortels de MANOWAR ces petits éléments si perceptibles et malheureusement irritants : un son de cloche par ci, un orgue triomphant par là, des refrains répétitifs à crever d’ennui sur des chansons jouées à vive allure (« Wings Of Light »), des hymnes qui se veulent puissantes et qui deviennent épuisantes (« Angel Of Darkness »), etc.
Par instants, on se prend à y croire. Un Heavy Metal épique, voire arabisant, fait son apparition avec « Holy Water » … et là, c’est le drame. Car arrive Maria Breon. Comment ? C’est qui ? Ah oui, ah ben c’est la chanteuse de HOLYHELL. Maria, elle chante sûrement très bien, non même c’est sûr, elle chante très bien, sauf quand elle prend cette putain de voix nasillarde. Un peu comme sur la reprise de GODGORY, « Resurrection ». Mais qu’est ce que c’est que ce massacre ? Et l’émotion, bordel ? Il y avait la place pour faire tellement mieux que ça …
Avec Maria, on sent qu’elle manque de coffre quand elle y met de la puissance, et que ça manque de patate quand elle trouve son second souffle. On a affaire ici à une vraie erreur de casting. Tout au long de l’album, et c’est flagrant sur les chansons les plus manowaresques (« Eclipse », « Resurrection », « Angel Of Darkness »), il apparaît évident que le style de HOLYHELL conviendrait mieux à un chanteur et non une chanteuse. Il ne s’agit pas de machisme primaire mais d’une déduction logique. Maria manque de charisme au moins vocalement et toutes les filles ne peuvent pas chanter du Heavy Metal, et oui n’est pas Floor Jansen qui veut.
Alors justement, HOLYHELL s’en sort beaucoup mieux lorsqu’il évoque AFTER FOREVER dans sa période la plus Power. Je dirais même qu’à ce titre, « Prophecy », « Last Vision », « Revelations » (carrément plus FM) et « Armageddon » sont des putains de compos. Si HOLYHELL (pardon, si Magic Circle Music) base la promo sur « Revelations », tu vas te faire avoir, cher lecteur. Car à part la très belle ballade « The Fall » où Maria chante d’une voix pure et cristalline, un style qu’on lui conseillerait plus volontiers, pour le reste, on assiste à un vrai plagiat en forme de bordel sans nom : du SYMPHONY X (« Gates Of Hell »), du RHAPSODY (« Apocalypse ») et même … et même … du MANOWAR ! Hein ? Je l’ai déjà dit ? Et alors ? Tout ça n’est pas franchement mauvais mais semble bien trop calculé, trop professionnel, pour respirer la sincérité.
Les guitaristes pourront toujours se réjouir du jeu de Joe Stump (énorme sur « Eclipse », « Revelations » et « The Fall »), se dire que Rhino ne se foule pas des masses ou que Jay Rigney se prend pour Joey DeMario (étonnant), moi je passe mon chemin.
Putain mais Joey qu’est ce que tu branles merde … N’importe quoi …
