Ang Lee aurait pu choisir JOB FOR A COWBOY pour son Brokeback Mountain mais oubliez alors les mots doux et la vaseline, car JOB FOR A COWBOY, ça tape fort et profond. J’ai découvert JFAC au Hellfest édition 2008 et ce qui a commencé par simplement attirer l’attention d’une oreille distraite a fini par couper le souffle d’un amateur d’émotions fortes… Nombre de mes confrères qualifient désormais la musique des Américains de Brutal Death. Certes. Mais l’élément Core ne saurait être balayé d’un simple revers de la main ; à moins de considérer que Core est devenu synonyme de moderne en matière de Metal et qu’il n’est plus utile de le mentionner. Pourtant, le Death pratiqué par JOB FOR A COWBOY n’entretient qu’une parenté éloignée avec un SUFFOCATION, MONSTROSITY ou DEICIDE pour ne citer qu’eux. Il est vrai que la formation s’éloigne un peu des rythmes plus typés Core des débuts, mais le Deathcore reste la marque de fabrique de ce Ruination et ce n’est pas pour me déplaire. D’ailleurs, alors qu’elle était presque anecdotique sur Genesis, l’alternance de growls et de vocaux corrosifs revient en force, assurant ainsi sur cet aspect une filiation plus nette avec l’excellente démo Doom même si le combo abandonne, pour mon plus grand regret, les couinements Grind. Ce qui frappe chez ces cowboys, c'est la puissance, plus que la technicité, le groove ou une quelconque atmosphère blasphématoire (d’ailleurs, JFAC a abandonné les interludes instrumentaux à la « Upheaval » ou « Blasphemy » qui, sur Genesis, contribuaient à créer une ambiance). Il n’empêche que la maîtrise est réelle : ainsi, l’alternance vocale citée plus haut fonctionne mieux et le jeu de batterie a gagné en maturité, de même que les soli, avec l’arrivée de deux nouveaux membres, Jon « The Charn » Rice et Al Glassman (ex-DESPISED ICON). Ça déménage à tous les étages, mais même si Ruination transpire la violence et JFAC est loin d’être assagi, nos cowboys ne s’expriment plus avec la même rage et la même spontanéité que celles qui se dégageaient de Doom. La succession de blasts et de breaks particulièrement épuisante, parfois linéaire, ne trouve un répit qu’avec le titre éponyme qui vient clore l’album sur des sonorités nettement plus Death et une atmosphère qui pointe son nez, mais un peu tard… l’auditeur est HS. Reste à savoir vers quels horizons va chevaucher JFAC, s’il va s’enfermer dans un canyon Death tradi ou préserver sa coloration Core pour le plus grand plaisir des petits et des grands.
