Pour les fans de progressif, la sortie d’un album de TRANSATLANTIC, c’est un peu comme la venue du père Noël. Savoir que l’on va se voir offrir un très beau cadeau sans vraiment en connaître le contenu. Et comme d’habitude, l’emballage est aussi soigné que le cadeau lui-même.
Après un Bridge Across Forever impeccable, la bande à Neal MORSE revient, pour propager la bonne parole. Et ils en ont des choses à dire, comme en témoigne The Whirlwind morceau de plus de 77 minutes, découpé en 12 mouvements.
Alors, bien sur, nous sommes en terrain connu, et rien ne va vraiment nous surprendre. On sait d’avance que l’on va écouter une musique soignée, peaufinée à l’extrême, exécutée par des musiciens perfectionnistes soucieux de transcender la moindre note jouée.
Je ne peux pas être objectif cependant avec Neal MORSE. Je trouve que cet homme possède toutes les qualités intrinsèques d’un musicien parfait. D’abord une faculté de composition époustouflante, un jeu de guitare inspiré, et surtout, une voix d’une pureté extraordinaire. Il prouve encore ces divers postulats sur cette dernière livraison.
Et le cadre TRANSATLANTIC permet à ses acolytes de se dépasser, d’épurer leur technique et d’aller à l’essentiel dans le cas de Mike PORTNOY, ou au contraire de se laisser aller à des digressions fabuleuses pour Pete TREWAVAS. Et l’ensemble aboutit à une cohésion rare, une alchimie magique que seuls peu de groupes peuvent atteindre.
Les styles sont sublimés, et l’on flirte la plupart du temps entre Rock, Pop et Classique, parfois Hard-Rock, mais d’une espèce bien particulière, et en en retenant la plupart du temps que la puissance de feu.
Rien n’est vulgaire ici, et encore moins surfait. Alors il est évident que le fan de Métal de base aura tendance à s’ennuyer, mais rien qu’à l’écoute du splendide segment de clôture, « Dancing With Eternal Glory / Whirlwind Reprise », où la voix de Sir MORSE atteint une fois de plus des sommets dans les harmonies cristallines, on reste persuadé qu’il y a parfois plus à retenir dans la musique que l’énergie ou la violence.
Je ne saurais vous détailler chaque partie de l’album, et la tâche serait vaine. Il faut une fois de plus faire l’effort d’aller jusqu’au bout, en ayant la garantie de ressortir de cette écoute le sourire aux lèvres, et la larme à l’œil.
TRANSATLANTIC nous démontre une fois de plus, et avec quel brio, que le Progressif, le vrai, l’unique, n’est pas seulement l’accumulation de plans tape à l’œil, la juxtaposition de structures complexes et rébarbatives, la masturbation instrumentale, mais bien une mosaïque enchanteresse qui sait dépasser les carcans inhérents à l’appréhension de la musique moderne.
Ici, on joue avec le cœur, la musique que l’on ressent au plus profond de soi même. C’est juste une histoire d’amour en fait.
La leur, la notre, et celle du monde.
