Après trois longues années de travail intensif et un E.P de sorti, les finlandais de BARREN EARTH nous offrent ici leur toute première galette officielle intitulée The Curse Of The Red River. Mais attention, ne croyez pas avoir affaire à des débutants, car celui-ci est melting pot des meilleurs musiciens finlandais, comportant des membres de SWALLOW THE SUN, KREATOR, MOONSORROW et AMORPHIS. Ce n'est pas inutilement que beaucoup leur avaient déjà prédit un avenir prometteur, rien qu'à la sortie de Our Twilight, leur E.P sorti en 2009 et c'est maintenant à moi de juger leur tout premier album.
Déjà, à la vue de la jaquette, j'en ai l'eau à la bouche. Nous voila face à un cimetière sous un soleil de plomb, aux couleurs très chaudes. Ca fait très Doom et ça laisse présager une ambiance mélancolique. Mais maintenant il faut passer aux choses sérieuses et lancer le disque pour enfin pouvoir juger par soi-même.
Et dès les premières notes, j'adhère. « Curse Of The Red River » et son intro enchanteresse nous met tout de suite dans l'ambiance, c'est vraiment planant. Puis ça part dans tous les sens, et c'est un pur régal. Les musiciens sont terriblement doués et très inspirés, sans parler de la voix qui impressionne, que ce soit en chant guttural (vraiment très extrême) ou en chant clair. Puis arrive, « Our Twilight » qui me laisse sans voix. En à peine deux titres, je suis déjà convaincu. On ressent bien les influences d'OPETH et le niveau du groupe est quasiment aussi technique que celui de leur mentor. La production est irréprochable. On est enivré par les ambiances délivrées tout au long des 9 tracks qui composent cette œuvre, subjugué par les solos démentiels que nous offrent les gratteux, terrassé devant la voix de Mikko (qui me fait beaucoup penser a celle de Seth de SEPTIC FLESH). Les morceaux s'écoutent avec délectation. Le groupe travaille ses mélodies avec un certain savoir faire comme le ferait un maitre ouvrier tordant sa soie dans son moulin à organsiner, comme sur la coupure de « Flicker » et son break instrumental diablement efficace ou encore les douces parties d'arpèges à la guitare acoustique sur « The Ritual Of The Dawn ».
Je ne m'inquiète pas du tout quant à l'avenir de ces finlandais. L'alchimie opère magnifiquement entre tout ce beau monde et je vois difficilement comment ils pourraient faire mieux. Curse Of The Red River est une vrai réussite et je vous le conseille à tous.
