Ceux qui, comme moi au début, pensaient que First River Regards était le nouvel album de MAR DE GRISES risquent d’être un rien déçus. En effet, ce quatre titres est la réédition de leur première démo initialement parue en 2002. Enfin, déçus, peut-être pas. Ceux qui ne la connaissaient pas et qui sont devenus des fervents du groupe seront aux anges. First River Regards leur fera découvrir deux titres qui n’avaient pas été repris par la suite sur leurs albums ainsi que deux versions plus anciennes de titres maintenant connus.
« Storm » introduit cette démo d’une manière magistrale. Les battements qui se perdent en échos solitaires annoncent une nouvelle plongée dans l’univers singulier du combo de Doom chilien. Sonneraient-ils l’Apocalypse ? Sans doute pas, mais ils ne sont pas forcément de bonne augure pour autant. Comme toujours sur ce disque, c’est le clavier de Marcelo qui ouvre les festivités. Toujours posé, toujours évocateur d’une profonde tristesse, il n’en est pas moins maîtrisé et complètement à sa place dans cette assemblage alchimique qu’est la musique de MAR DE GRISES. Et, une fois de plus, cette alchimie va faire son effet. On se laisse bercer par la voix de Marcelo, presque toujours susurrante, éthérée, ou hypnotisée quand elle passe les barrières de la souffrance. Mais il n’est pas seul dans le groupe. Les guitares se font oppressantes et écrasantes, plus par leur son gras Death que par leurs accords, somme toute connus dans le style. Mais le tout ajoute une nouvelle couche de plomb que l’on doit supporter sur nos épaules déjà bien alourdies. D’ailleurs, il n’y a pas que le son qui lorgne vers le Death. Certains passages, comme la fin de « For Just An Eternity », sont du pur Death Epique, même si lents. Le groupe ne veut pas complètement s’enliser dans un style duquel il ne pourrait jamais sortir. Et c’est tant mieux. Le Doom est la pierre angulaire de leur musique, mais ils se laissent toute latitude pour le rendre plus profond et plus marquant en s’en éloignant par moment.
On retrouvera aussi les titres « Mar De Grises » et « For Just An Eternity » sur la partie multimédia. Deux titres pris en concert. Certes, la qualité n’est pas forcément au rendez-vous, mais cela donne une idée de ce que le groupe peu proposer à son public. Une très bonne chose pour ceux qui ne les auraient encore jamais vus.
Peut-être pas un disque indispensable, mais certainement une initiative qui sera très bien accueillie par les inconditionnels du groupe, toujours plus nombreux.
