Après bien des hésitations et pertes de temps, MASTERPLAN est de retour. Alors que Jorn Lande avait quitté le groupe après l’excellent Aeronautics, c’était l’Américain Mike DiMeo (ex-RIOT) qui lui avait succédé pour un MK II fort acceptable. Mais Roland Grapow, guitariste leader du combo germanique, ne semblait pas satisfait des prestations de son nouveau frontman. Et surtout, il espérait le retour improbable du volage et instable blond suédois au micro. Alors, prenant son courage à deux mains (ironie), il a patiemment attendu que le temps passe et laissé DiMeo sans nouvelles pendant des mois. La grande classe ! Du coup, c’est un DiMeo découragé qui a annoncé lui-même son départ de MASTERPLAN. « Hallelujah » a du se dire Grapow. Il allait enfin pouvoir négocier avec Lande pour sa ré-intégration. Voilà pour la partie « Dallas » …
Donc, comme on le disait, le Duke a récupéré son trône. Je dis « trône » car cela m’évoque le titre du nouvel album, Time To Be King, qui sonne un tant soit peu prétentieux, comme si MASTERPLAN tenait absolument à récupérer une couronne qu’il n’a jamais portée. A défaut d’être un Roi, MASTERPLAN a son Duke. Mais que les négociations ont du être difficiles, mon pauvre Roland je te plains ! Le père Lande a sans aucun doute posé ses conditions. Finies, les titres à la HELLOWEEN, que Jorn n’apprécie guère. Le Happy Metal, c’est pas pour lui, il ne s’en est jamais caché. Comme si il n’avait jamais assumé, dans un registre proche, les « Wounds » ou « Falling Sparrow » (sur Aeronautics, pour rappel).
Et pourtant … Le single extrait de ce nouvel opus, « Far From The End Of The World », assimilant le Speed Metal d’HELLOWEEN et la mélodie presque mélancolique si chère à Roland Grapow et Axel Mackenrott (claviers), s’inscrit dans la même lignée que les titres cités plus haut. Et fait mouche. Un peu comme « Blue Opera », où la technique œuvre au service de l’harmonie musicale. Alors ces chansons-là ont du être composées avant le retour de Jorn, c’est sûr …
Le Duke, lui, aime les morceaux plus Rock, ou dans un autre domaine, plus progressifs. Plus Rock, parce que son idole, et il est difficile de s’en cacher, s’appelle David Coverdale (WHITESNAKE, pour les incultes). La power-ballade dénommée « The Dark Road » laisse planer le doute : est ce le Duke qui chante ou alors le beau David ? A s’y méprendre … Voilà qui aurait presque pu figurer sur un album du Serpent Blanc. Ah oui, Roland, tu as du en baver pour faire revenir ton « copain », celui-là, il a aussi du te demander de lui jouer du ARK. Quand on entend « The Black One », qui commence comme un « Enlighten Me » (sur Masterplan), et qui se détache ensuite vers des cieux plus Heavy, voire groovy, avant que les claviers de Mackenrott partent dans tous les sens, la question qui vient à l’esprit c’est « mais qu’est ce que c’est que ce bœuf ? ». Et pareil pour « The Sun Is In Your Hands ». MASTERPLAN joue Heavy, avec des grosses guitares bien grasses, mais les parties de chacun ne s’accordent jamais, tout le monde joue dans son coin. Ce titre trouve son moment de grâce lorsque Roland s’envole enfin aux côtés d’un Mike Terrana (batterie) tonitruant. Mais la joie est de courte durée.
Alors, trop compliqué pour MASTERPLAN, le Metal progressif ? Pas si sûr. La magie opère sans problème sur l’oriental « Lonely Winds Of War ». Simplement, MASTERPLAN est plus à l’aise sur des morceaux plus directs, aux mélodies aguicheuses (« Blow Your Winds » et son joli piano, « Under The Moon »). On ne peut pas prétendre avec certitude que ce répertoire conviendra toujours à un Jorn Lande finalement très exigeant.
Le Duke, même s’il chante toujours aussi bien, ne semble pas y avoir mis tout son cœur. Time To Be King n’a rien de mauvais, mais voilà, le cœur n’y est pas. Quelque part, allez poser une oreille sur les derniers AVANTASIA de Tobias Sammet (The Wicked Symphony, Angel Of Babylon) et vous y trouverez un Jorn beaucoup plus concerné. Comme quoi, ces retrouvailles au sein de MASTERPLAN ne respirent pas vraiment la sincérité.
