Il y a des fois comme ça, où lorsque débute un album, on sent comme un malaise et on éprouve l’irrémédiable envie de stopper cette écoute. Malheureusement, notre rôle de chroniqueur ne nous le permet pas et tant mieux d’ailleurs. Car il m’aura bien fallu deux écoutes pour découvrir que ce Lichtgestalten, troisième opus de VANITAS, n’était pas totalement dénudé d’intérêt.
Pourtant, ça démarrait plutôt bien, l’intro d’« Endlosscheleif » qui ouvre l’album envoie bien, mais c’est dès que l’on passe dans le vif du sujet que tout devient plus difficile. Les riffs gothique mid tempo et la voix growlé d’Andreas me bloque. En trois titres seulement, on a l’impression d’avoir déjà fait le tour et d’être face à un album gothique parmi tant d’autres, et qui en plus n’est pas parfait niveau production. Les guitares et claviers éclipsent complètement le reste. Mais soudain arrive « Sammelleidenschaft » et son rythme Folk/Pagan, qui nous éclaire et nous prouve que les autrichiens sont plus éclectiques qu’ils n’y semblent. Il y a d’ailleurs à plusieurs reprises des passages Pagan, comme sur les morceaux « Menschen, Gott, Maschinen » ou encore « Vergangenes Kehrt Wieder », qui ont même réussi à me rappeler du ENSIFERUM dans leurs rythmes. Et lorsque le chant devient susurré, on peut noter certaines connivences avec celui d’un certain Till, chanteur du désormais groupe mythique RAMMSTEIN (peut être est-ce simplement dû à l’usage de l’allemand). A la fin de cette première écoute, on arrive enfin à être en phase avec les voix (oui, car il y a aussi celle de la soprano Maria Dorn) et le son, et c’est lors de la seconde que l’ensemble deviens agréable à l’écoute.
Donc même si l’ensemble est relativement varié, le tout n’a rien de spectaculaire et il n’y a pas de quoi fouetter un chat. Néanmoins les morceaux sont efficaces et VANITAS qui clamait vouloir faire quelque chose de musicalement inclassable et d’original, n‘a pas failli à sa tache.
