Christophe, l’insupportable mais néanmoins extrêmement drôle champion belge de l’émission « Tout Le Monde Veut Prendre Sa Place » s’est fait éjecté du fauteuil rouge après 130 victoires et 157 700€ en poche (soit le double de la richesse nationale belge…). A peine débarrassés de l’envahisseur, voilà que d’autres belges veulent venir squatter, non plus les fauteuils, mais les bacs de notre beau pays ! Mais ça ne se passera pas comme ça ! Nous ferons résistance à RESISTANCE ! Originaires de Mons et forts de deux full-lenghts avant ce Lords Of Torment, nos cinq compères semblent s’épanouir dans un cercle au sein duquel se montrer créatif relève de l’exploit : la grande famille du Death. Car RESISTANCE est avant tout un groupe de Death Metal. Partant de cette base, nous aurons bien l’occasion d’affiner nos critères d’appellation grâce aux différents éléments qui fourmillent dans cette galette.
Grosse déception, vous n’aurez pas l’occasion d’entendre l’hilarant accent belge dans les vocaux de Xerus pour deux raisons bien précises. Les lyrics sont en anglais mais surtout, la ligne de chant est beaucoup trop brutale pour distinguer quoi que ce soit. En marge de cela, j’y reconnais tout de même une qualité incontestable. Ce Xerus possède un grain dans le growl absolument spécial et appréciable. Ses gruiks sont aussi d’excellente facture. Du tout bon ! Derrière ce frontman naturel, les instrumentistes ne font pas non plus dans la dentèle. Présence élégante de Richard et Olivier aux guitares, discrète de Benoit à la basse, survoltée de Jonas aux drums. Un shaker plein de bonnes intentions qui versera un nectar empoisonné dans votre chope. Car malsaine, cette œuvre l’est ! Le Brutal Death se pare de ses plus beaux atouts mais défile dans son plus simple appareil. Une forme de pureté en ressort. Pureté qui se mue vite en simplisme. Un bon défouloir au début. Une romance interminable à la fin. Lords Of Torment tombe le voile au fil du temps. Compact, granuleux… il devient vite un sauna dans lequel on entre vêtu d’une chapka. L’atmosphère devient irrespirable, brûle vos bronches. Le mixage soigné de Jean-François Dagenais (guitariste de KATAKLYSM) est une tartine de Vicks Vaporub sur votre torse meurtri. Une bouffée d’air frais. Pas très loin des productions actuelles qui virent à l’insupportable, cet opus reste globalement confortablement soudé à la masse et ne se détache qu’à l’occasion de passages plus Deathcore (« Hail »). D’autres pistes donnent plutôt une sensation d’inexploitation d’idées. A l’image de « F.Y.A » qui grouille d’énergie mais qui manque de relief dans les moments opportuns. RESISTANCE aurait gagné à être un peu plus groovy, plus freelance, plus culotté.
Au final, ce disque somme toute très incisif et violent s’est fait remarqué dans ses premiers instants avant de rentrer doucement dans le moule. Croyez-moi, c’est avec une infinie déception que je renonce à accueillir RESISTANCE sur le trône. Mais nos voisins n’ont pas encore les hanches assez larges pour revêtir le string du champion. Nul doute que ça ira mieux après avoir ingurgité un seau de frites.
