Qu’il doit être difficile pour un groupe comme LORDI de perdurer avec le temps. La recette de Mr Lordi puisse sans hésiter dans les répertoires d’ACCEPT, ALICE COOPER, et accessoirement ROB ZOMBIE. Cantonné au sobriquet de « groupe grimé », LORDI doit sans cesse prouver par sa musique qu’il n’existe pas seulement à travers cinq déguisements. The Arockalypse et la victoire à l’Eurovision avaient propulsé LORDI au rang de « phénomène Metal », puis Deadache avait conforté le combo finlandais dans son style.
Pour son nouvel album, Babez For Breakfast, LORDI a composé pas moins de 44 démos (!!!), comme il en a certes l’habitude, mais avec l’optique de proposer cette fois du matériel un tant soit peu différent, en tous cas doté d’une approche plus audacieuse. Conscients de leur condition de groupe bouffon, LORDI et son leader connaissent parfaitement les aléas du métier et les risques de lasser trop vite…
Alors, pour Babez For Breakfast (cette pochette !), LORDI a sélectionné 14 morceaux qui ne s’éloignent jamais vraiment de son répertoire initial, avec toutefois quelques surprises. Un « Discoevil », aux relents disco (forcément … mais on reste loin du « I Was Made For Loving You » de KISS) voire Indus, va en surprendre plus d’un. La tentative est bien là mais pourrait passer pour un leurre. De même qu’un « I Am Bigger Than You », sorte de WHITE ZOMBIE encore plus Techno. Il ne fait aucun doute, en revanche, que LORDI sonne de plus en plus Heavy, est-ce dû à la production de Michael Wagener ou à une intention assumée ?
Le fait est que le titre éponyme et « This Is Heavy Metal » sonnent très crus. Autant « Babez For Breakfast » se retrouve pour le coup beaucoup moins accrocheur, autant « This Is Heavy Metal », avec ses airs manowaresques et son solo de guitare, cartonne bien comme il faut. S’il y en a bien un qui s’éclate, sur Babez For Breakfast, c’est le guitariste Amen ! Des solos par ci, par là, en veux-tu en voilà … A certains moments LORDI deviendrait même un groupe de True Metal !!!
Mais les claviers d’Awa, un peu en retrait au départ, prennent à nouveau le dessus dès « Rock Police ». Dans la veine des The Arockalypse et Deadache, le fan de LORDI retrouve le Monster Metal à la sauce ALICE COOPER (époque FM) qu’il connaît si bien. Les « Nonstop Nite » et « Loud And Loaded », parfaits du riff aux lignes de chants, sont du même acabit. Quel dommage que ces joyaux soient éparpillés au milieu d’essais infructueux et titres pour le moins anecdotiques : « Midnite Lover » vraiment trop gentillet, « ZombieRawkMachine » entre Big Rock américain et mélodie aux airs de mille fois entendues, « Call Off The Wedding » qui joue le rôle de la ballade sans grand intérêt, etc.
Même un « Give Your Life For Rock’N’Roll », à moitié emprunté au « Dogs On Lead » d’ACCEPT, muni de ses changements de rythme fréquents et des twin guitars déchaînées, peine à convaincre. C’est là tout le paradoxe du phénomène LORDI : dans son domaine, il doit exceller au risque de passer pour ringard, et chaque innovation se traduit par un changement de cap maladroit.
Certes, avec Babez For Breakfast, LORDI élargit son répertoire. Certes, avec Babez For Breakfast, LORDI a encore changé ses costumes. Voilà un album qui ne présente rien de franchement mauvais mais complètement inégal, dégageant cette fâcheuse impression que la période de disette arrive à grands pas, un peu comme l’ont connu W.A.S.P. ou KISS dans le même genre.
Alors au lieu de bouffer des cochonnes au petit déj’, LORDI devrait peut-être essayer de bouffer du lion.
