Connaissez-vous l’Iscariote ? Non ? C’est pourtant le nom du plus grand traître de l’Histoire, avant même Bernard Kouchner ; j’ai nommé Judas ! Et visiblement, les allemands d’A TRAITOR LIKE JUDAS semblent avoir une dent contre lui. Ces derniers ne sont pas bien vieux, mais ils ont commencé bien jeunes. En 2000, plus précisément. A vu d’œil, c’est avec à peine la majorité en poche qu’ils ont dû sortir leur premier album, Too Desesperate To Breathe In… en 2004, auquel succéda Nightmare Inc. en 2005, lui-même prédécesseur du tardif Endtimes qui nous arrive enfin, cinq années après leur dernière sortie. Inutile de dire qu’entre temps, de l’eau à coulé sous les ponts et que c’est certainement avec une intégrité différente que les teutons ont abordé l’enregistrement de ce disque.
Premier élément clé : l’artwork. Endtimes suit cette tendance inexplicable de représenter un cercle, une planète, une sphère au centre de sa pochette, à l’instar des derniers WE ARE THE ILLUSION, THE LAST FELONY, THE CONTORTIONIST, THE RED SHORE, AFTER THE BURIAL et IMPENDING DOOM (dont les reviews sont toutes notées sur mon petit calepin) et j’en oublie probablement... Second élément clé : la musique. On se rapproche vraiment beaucoup des idées reçues qui font les mauvaises heures du Hardcore, selon lesquelles les musiciens n’auraient pas ou peu d’inventivité, qu’il n’y aurait guère d’émotions véhiculées dans les compos et qu’enfin, trouver un groupe de Hardcore qui accroche l’oreille reviendrait à partir à la chasse au Dahu. Hélas, A TRAITOR LIKE JUDAS regroupe toutes ces péjorations dans son disque qui ne sonne ni plus ni moins comme un pâle copier-coller de ce que fait BORN FROM PAIN et d’autres dont font partie GRANTIG quand ils groovent sur « We'll Only Live As Long As We Chose To Carry On » ou BRING ME THE HORIZON quand ils choisissent un remake / plagiat évident du célèbre « Chelsea Smile » sur « Mirror Image ». Scandaleux ! Quelquefois, les allemands s’essayent à des variations rythmiques plus personnelles et des parties de guitares soignées comme sur « Your Heroes » ou à de gros riffs typés Metalcore (« Systematic Reclusion »), mais sans trop de succès. Car si la forme laisse moins à désirer que le reste, c’est le fond qui fait défaut. Endtimes ne possède pas le truc en plus qui en ferait une des sorties les plus honorables de 2010. Ce full-lenght se fond dans la masse grumeleuse et opaque des enregistrements les plus bancals de cette cuvée. Le frontman n’a aucune personnalité musicale. Athlète bodybuildé, mâchoire carrée, bras couverts de tatouages en plus de gueuler faux. Et après ? Derrière lui, les zicos ne font pas le poids. Trop jeunes, manquant de maturité et ayant besoin d’un modèle auquel se référer. Les plus grands groupes de ce monde ne sont pas parvenus à la reconnaissance en pompant allégrement sur les autres.
Je suis peut-être un peu exigeant avec A TRAITOR LIKE JUDAS. Mais bon sang, quand on a la chance de vivre dans un pays aussi éveillé et productif musicalement que l’Allemagne, comment expliquer avoir encore à traiter d’albums qui en proviennent et sonnent symboliquement comme tout, sauf du Hardcore à l’allemande ? Qui est vraiment l’Iscariote dans l’histoire ?
