2 ans après un excellent Silicon Messiah, le groupe de Blaze Bayley, sobrement baptisé BLAZE, revient avec un concept album ambitieux, Tenth Dimension. Si on ne change pas une équipe qui gagne, puisque Andy Sneap conserve sa place derrière la console et que le line-up demeure le même, en revanche on ne peut pas dire que l’histoire futuriste et un peu trop farfelue imaginée par Blaze allège ce nouvel album, déjà très chargé en riffs heavy comme jamais. Alors forcément, on ne considérera pas Tenth Dimension comme une totale réussite mais plutôt comme un album mi-figue, mi-raisin.
Côté production, rien à dire : Andy Sneap donne à chaque chanson un son tout simplement énorme, ce qui contribue grandement à sauver des titres certainement passés inaperçus avec un mixage pourri. Côté performances, idem : Bayley chante toujours aussi bien dans son registre (fans sectaires de MAIDEN, vous pouvez aller voir ailleurs …), et si la section rythmique (Rob Naylor à la basse, Jeff Singer à la batterie) fait correctement le boulot, c’est surtout le duo de six-cordistes constitué de John Slater et Steve Wray qui attire l’attention.
La plupart des titres étant le fruit d’un travail collectif, l’influence évidente des anciens groupes de Thrash reconvertis dans le Metal lourd (METALLICA et MEGADETH en tête) saute aux oreilles, entre autres sur l’ouverture tonitruante « Kill And Destroy » ou sur le puissant titre éponyme « The Tenth Dimension ». Et puis BLAZE, ça reste quand même du Heavy Metal sacrément bien foutu qui fait secouer la tête et taper du pied : la preuve avec « Stealing Time ». Et puis écoutez moi ces solos …
Au rayon des innovations, une pointe de musique progressive fait son apparition, sur « The Truth Revealed » et « Meant To Be ». Intéressant aussi, ce chant arabisant sur fond de rythmique plombée pendant « End Dream ». Sauf que cela ne compense pas ces lacunes, ces « ratés » rapides certes mais 100 fois prévisibles (« Leap Of Faith », « Speed Of Light »). Et alors, que dire des pesants « Nothing Will Stop Me » et « Stranger To The Light », insistant à mort sur une lourdeur qui n’en demandait pas tant.
En un mot, Tenth Dimension confirme qu’il n’est pas aisé de captiver l’attention en permanence sur un concept-album, surtout quand on pratique un Heavy Metal moderne et appuyé. Dommage.
