Si la sortie d'un album live après seulement deux albums studio peut paraître quelque peu précipitée pour BLAZE (le groupe), il ne faut pas oublier que Blaze Bayley, en 2003, fait presque figure de vétéran. Passé l'épisode WOLFSBANE (son premier groupe pro) qui avait permis au public Metal de découvrir ce chanteur hors-norme, Bayley remplaçait en Décembre 1993 un Bruce Dickinson démissionnaire au sein d'IRON MAIDEN. Pour le résultat qu'on connaît (un très bon et très sombre The X-Factor, un archi-moyen Virtual XI ...), et une éjection peu élégante en 1999 lors du retour de Bruce ...
De ce fait, il n'y a rien de surprenant cette setlist conséquente, qui justifie pleinement sa répartition sur deux galettes. Certains classiques de MAIDEN lors de l'époque 1995-1998 s'intègrent naturellement au répertoire de BLAZE, comme "When Two Worlds Collide", le magnifique "The Sign Of The Cross" (un poil accéléré) ou "Futureal". L'interprétation de ces morceaux par le line-up Steve Wray (guitares) / John Slater (guitares) / Rob Naylor (basse) / Jeff Singer (batterie) est très fidèle aux originaux, et Blaze sort même de son chapeau magique un "Virus" qu'on n'attendait plus, titre apparemment mis de côté par Steve Harris et pourtant adoré par son frontman d'alors. Les quatre musiciens n'avaient pas l'air très chauds pour jouer du WOLFSBANE, mais Bayley les persuade de l'impact énergique de "As Tough As Steel", et on ne peut pas lui donner tort !
Quant aux extraits de Silicon Messiah et Tenth Dimension, point de surprise : ils passent brillamment l'épreuve de la scène, et prennent encore une autre ampleur devant un public conquis, que Blaze se plaît à faire participer aussi souvent que possible. Mention spéciale à "Ghost In The Machine" qui arrache tout, à un "The Brave" joué à fond la caisse, et à un "Stare At The Sun" toujours aussi bien amené et dont je ne me remettrai jamais (il s'agit, sans doute possible, de l'un des meilleurs morceaux de Heavy Metal de tous les temps). Seule la reprise de LED ZEPPELIN, "Dazed And Confused", fait hors-sujet, même si Blaze assure comme un chef.
Le mixage de As Live As It Gets assuré par Andy Sneap (encore lui) envoie tout droit au milieu du public, on s'y croirait, et les deux disques dégagent une pêche d'enfer. Voilà le genre de production avec laquelle la question éternelle demeure : sincère ou trop propre pour être honnête ? De toutes façons ce ne serait pas le premier album live trop retouché en studio ... As Live As It Gets reste néanmoins le témoignage parfait du cru BLAZE 2003 sur scène, constituant en plus un Best Of Bayley tout à fait respectable.
