L’automne s’est confortablement installé dans nos contrées. Les feuilles rougissent, la nuit tombe tôt, les souvenirs de Jack O’ Lantern décorent les pavillons, la brume matinale s’éternise dans les pâturages… pas de doutes, c’est la période idéale pour se faire le dernier AUTUMN OFFERING. Pourtant, ce dernier a fait son apparition dans les bacs un peu en avance. Nous étions fin aout, je sirotais peinard un Sex On The Beach sur une terrasse en bord de mer, entouré de gros bonnets (pas ceux qu’on porte en hiver…) et d’insouciance. Je regarde par la fenêtre, retour à la réalité. Sale temps pour le Metalcore. Le come-back d’une de ses valeurs les plus sûres de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique, à peine un an après Requiem, parait un brin précipité. Quoique nos floridiens prouvent avec cette cadence imposante (cinq full-lenght en six années) leur appétit gargantuesque et leur passion dévorante pour un style qu’ils pratiquent depuis 1999.
Le crédo de ce disque ? Eviter à tout prix la prise de tête. Pour preuve, nous avons droit à un opus éponyme sur lequel THE AUTUMN OFFERING jour simple mais joue juste. A l’heure où le Metalcore rame dans un bourbier, il est très plaisant de retrouver un peu de fraicheur et de spontanéité. D’autant que conformément à ce qu’ils ont toujours fait, les américains ne restent pas cantonnés dans un style précis. On retrouvera sur The Autumn Offering, autant de passages Metalcore que de passages Death mélodique et même quelques effluves Deathcore. Le quintet varie son jeu, alterne et oriente sa musique dans de multiples contrées en s’appuyant sur deux données importantes : la lead guitare qui aère l’ensemble de par ses solos permanents et les vocaux entremêlés de Matt qui passe d’une second à l’autre des growls aux screams. Toute la typicité du Metalcore à l’américaine se retrouve dans ce disque, de la production longiligne façon GOD FORBID à l’inspiration niaise un peu Emo dans les refrains (« Fed To The Lions », « Death Mask », « Myriad Black ») qui rappellent fortement le chant du Matt de TRIVIUM. THE AUTUMN OFFERING joue de manière facile, calque systématiquement ses structures et répète inlassablement les mêmes blasts sur les mêmes riffs. La formule laisse envisager une certaine forme de lassitude au bout d’un moment. C’est juste. Mais les ricains, au contraire de certains, ne se laissent pas biaiser par l’apparente simplicité de leur musique. Ils sont suffisamment habiles de leurs instruments pour livrer le strict nécessaire d’inventivité. Celui qui fait toute la différence entre un bon et un mauvais disque, avouons-le.
The Autumn Offering ne laissera pas un souvenir impérissable puisqu’il lui manque un ou deux hits en puissance. Les guitares maquillées et les refrains racoleurs font en général bon effet auprès de tous mais ne suffisent pas toujours à masquer les carences les plus graves. Etonnamment, THE AUTUMN OFFERING s’en est sorti à bon compte avec un éponyme qui regroupe ces différentes caractéristiques sans pour autant donner à l’auditeur l’impression de s’être fait arnaquer. Si le Metalcore pouvait être toujours aussi agréable à écouter…
