Après un Primal Fear très conventionnel, le combo mené par Ralf Scheepers (chant) et Mat Sinner (basse) passe la vitesse supérieure. Le premier album de PRIMAL FEAR avait répondu à certaines attentes sans toutefois pleinement satisfaire ceux qui voyaient en ce nouveau super-groupe un digne héritier de JUDAS PRIEST. Jaws Of Death, second album accouché à peine quelques mois après, durcit le ton et arrache tout sur son passage. A dire vrai, dans le genre, il s’apparente presque à l’album parfait. Si vous cherchez l’album le plus proche du Painkiller de JUDAS, ne cherchez plus, c’est celui-là.
D’abord, PRIMAL FEAR enregistre l’arrivée du talentueux guitariste soliste Stefan Leibing, pour épauler le gaucher Tom Naumann. Avec Leibing, PRIMAL FEAR atteint un niveau technique insoupçonné et se permet d’ajouter quelques sonorités proches du Thrash à son Heavy Metal germanique. Ainsi le très agressif « Church Of Blood » permet d’entrevoir un nouveau potentiel, où double grosse caisse, duels de guitares et chœurs tonitruants dévastent tout. Ralf Scheepers chante parfois aussi haut perché que le ferait un Halford au mieux de sa forme (« Into The Future ») et l’illusion paraît quasi-parfaite. Quant à Stefan Leibing, ses solos ne passent pas inaperçus, le bonhomme jouant avec un facilité déconcertante (un cran au dessus de son complice Naumann), et apportant un plus indéniable au sein du groupe.
Bien sûr, PRIMAL FEAR n’échappe pas à ses racines, maîtrisant son répertoire à la perfection, du registre le plus speedé (« Final Embrace », « Nation In Fear », « Save A Prayer ») aux chansons les plus Heavy (« Under Your Spell », « When The Night Comes ») décidément prévues pour headbanguer à s’en faire péter la nuque. Bien que plus agressif, PRIMAL FEAR n’oublie jamais de rester mélodique lorsque les morceaux l’imposent (« Fight To Survive ») et c’est sûrement la raison pour laquelle Jaws Of Death est aussi bien ficelé : on ne note d’ailleurs presque aucun temps mort. Même la reprise du « Kill The King » de RAINBOW donne un sérieux coup de fouet à la version originale !
t puis, une fois de plus, la production accomplie par Mat Sinner lui-même donne une sacrée envergure au son de PRIMAL FEAR. Qu’il est agréable, au passage, d’entendre aussi bien la basse sur un album de Metal, et un Ian Hill aurait certainement mérité un tel traitement sur les albums du PRIEST. Alors si certains crient au plagiat (la suite ne leur donnera pas tort …) et voient en PRIMAL FEAR un simple tribute-band à JUDAS PRIEST, la vraie question est la suivante : l’élève auteur de cet excellent Jaws Of Death aurait-il dépassé le maître, qui s’apprête à toucher le fond avec Demolition ?
