Porté par deux figures emblématiques du Heavy Metal teuton, à savoir Ralf Scheepers et Mat Sinner, PRIMAL FEAR s’est forgé une solide réputation en l’espace de deux albums et a su se constituer un répertoire de classiques : « Battalions Of Hate », « Running In The Dust », « Under Your Spell » ou encore « Chainbreaker ». Le groupe multiplie les tournées, les concerts, et ce n’est pas le départ de Tom Naumann (guitares) qui va le freiner. Henny Wolter (ex THUNDERHEAD) le remplace à la volée et PRIMAL FEAR annonce son retour discographique avec Nuclear Fire.
D’entrée de jeu sur ce nouvel album, le malaise s’installe. Du roulement de batterie jusqu’au riff, « Angel In Black » ne se contente plus d’exploiter la recette du « Painkiller » de JUDAS PRIEST, il en reprend l’intégralité (mis à part, peut-être, le refrain, qui se démarque un petit peu …). Du statut d’héritier de la bande à Halford, PRIMAL FEAR endosse soudain le maillot du plagieur sans scrupule. Quand à « Kiss Of Death », il débute exactement de la même façon que « Hell Patrol », lui aussi sur Painkiller !!! Un comble ! Ce ne sont pas, à proprement parler, de mauvaises chansons, loin de là, mais pour les puristes, c’est la goutte d’eau …
Heureusement, Nuclear Fire propose son lot de titres comme PRIMAL FEAR sait si bien le faire, dans le genre carré (« Now Or Never », « Eye Of An Eagle », énormes !) ou plus accéléré (« Nuclear Fire » et sa mélodie savoureuse à deux guitares). La déclaration d’amour au Metal n’a rien d’hypocrite et « Living For Metal » en atteste. Si Nuclear Fire se révèle être l’album de PRIMAL FEAR le plus varié (on passe du thrashisant « Fight The Fire » au plus modéré et mélodique « Iron Fist In A Velvet Glove »), il suscite également quelques inquiétudes : même en diversifiant son Metal, PRIMAL FEAR aurait-il déjà tout dit ? D’autant que certains titres auraient pu passer à la trappe : la tentative avortée de ballade (« Bleed For Me »), les bourrins inutiles (« Back From Hell », « Fire On The Horizon ») ou les prévisibles (« Red Rain »).
Comment qualifier Nuclear Fire ? Manque d’inspiration ? Ce sont les qualités de chacun (les prouesses vocales de Ralf Scheepers, la dextérité de Stefan Leibing, la frappe de Klaus Sperling, entre autres) et les ficelles habituelles du genre qui permettent à Nuclear Fire de ne pas passer pour un album raté mais pour une bonne réalisation. Sans génie, certes, mais bonne.
