« Une BO sans film… Et pourquoi pas un avion sans pilote ? Allez, du vent, j’ai le lancement du dernier Lady Caca à préparer, moi ! ». Une fin de non recevoir comme les businessmen d’Univers Sale ou autre grand label en opposent depuis toujours aux projets difficilement marketables tels que celui d’ELVIN ROAD alias Antoine Saison. Sauf qu'un avion sans pilote, ça existe, et c'est l'avenir...
Pas de maison de disques ? Vive l’autoprod’! Pas d'images à coller sur cette musique ? Qu‘à cela ne tienne, on piochera dans nos mémoires cinéphiles quelques instantanés de Lynch, Carpenter et Mann; trois réalisateurs ayant en commun un sens aigu de l’esthétisme dissimulant à peine leur fascination pour la monstruosité des perversions humaines, mais aussi l’attention particulière qu’ils accordent à leurs BO, riches en nappes de synthés et en gros riffs.
Voilà l’univers qu’ELVIN ROAD développe avec Monsters, deuxième album d’un projet solo ressemblant de plus en plus à un vrai groupe. Après un premier album instrumental constitué à 80% de synthés, Antoine Saison a voulu donner plus de place à ses musiciens, allant jusqu’à faire appel à un chanteur sur 5 titres. Bien que les claviers constituent encore l’ossature de toutes ses compos, ELVIN ROAD se fait donc beaucoup plus organique : véritables batterie et basse, guitares au son brut, pas de boucles et autres artifices de production. On a vraiment le sentiment que derrière les synthés, il y a un être humain qui joue avec ses doigts, et pas un Mac qui joue avec ses bits. Bien loin d'être un handicap, ces claviers à l’esthétique late-eighties sont en totale cohérence avec les références ciné revendiquées par ELVIN ROAD. On ne peut pas en dire autant du chanteur dont l’accent frenchie fait parfois un peu tache dans cet univers très américain ("Prom Queen"). Plus gênant encore, celui-ci franchit les frontières de la justesse sur "Kill the Hype". C’est d’autant plus regrettable qu’il est aussi capable du meilleur comme ces vocaux aériens sur le très beau "Sutured". La partie vocale n’est donc pas une grande réussite sur cet album. Même la présence en guest de Lena, chanteuse du groupe Electro JABBERWOCK n’y fait rien: son duo sur "Division of Love" tirant dangereusement vers le kitsch. On préfèrera ses vocalises inquiétantes sur "Colimaçon", un titre d’une perversité jubilatoire qui tranche agréablement avec la tonalité plutôt posée de l’album. Car si Monsters s’ouvre sur 2 morceaux ouvertement Metal, il met très rapidement la pédale douce, au risque d’endormir plus d’un chevelu. Un bourrinage supplémentaire vers la fin de l’album n’aurait sans doute pas été de trop.
Ces quelques imperfections ne suffisent pas à occulter l'originalité et la grande qualité du projet. Cohérent et très soigné, Monsters se déguste comme un bon film fantastique, auquel il manquerait juste un ou deux gunfights et de meilleurs dialogues.
