CORKAGE, combo lyonnais dont j’ai eu le plaisir de rencontrer certains membres pendant le Hellfest 2011 s’est créé en 1993 (et oui déjà…), c’est dire que les gaillards n’en sont pas à leur coup d’essai. Après Sun en 1997 et Death To The Deserving en 2009, ils nous présentent aujourd’hui les stigmates de leur histoire : The Sequel. Comme ils le constatent eux-mêmes, c’est après une phase végétative difficile qui a suffisamment durée que Ben (basse) intègre le groupe en 2006, amenant par la même occasion un souffle nouveau et la force au groupe de sortir la tête de l’eau. S’ensuit la rencontre avec Amine (chant) qui bouclera la boucle. Les voilà fins prêts pour s’atteler au mieux à de nouvelles œuvres. C’est avec Death To Deserving qu’ils reprendront la bataille, mais c’est très nettement avec The Sequel qu’ils développent leur véritable identité laissant émaner enfin leur vrai caractère musical.
Première piste, on est forcément interpellé par le rythme syncopé qui s’installe déjà en quelques secondes, mais ce qui pour ma part m’a scotché, c’est le chant. Une hargne domptée qui laisse apparaître un chant… français ! Etrange donc de se concentrer sur les dires d’Amine (chant) quand on n’a pas l’habitude d’ouïr des grunts ou growls en tous genres dans la langue de Molière.
Je ne saurais vous dire pourquoi, mais j’ai de très loin préféré « Sado Maso Diplomat ». Oui je vous vois venir d’ici, le patronyme de ce titre n’y est pour rien et je le clame haut et fort même si les images que j’ai auparavant utilisées pour d’autres chroniques m’ont fait perdre quelque peu ma crédibilité en la matière. D’une part parce que cette fois le chant n’y est pas dans ma langue natale et Dieu sait que j’y suis presque allergique, mais surtout parce que la musicalité s’instaure fermement. On oscille entre séquences et nappes plus mélodiques empruntes de chœurs virils.<br<
Les téméraires ont même osé une escapade au sein d’un temple bouddhiste et se sont payé le luxe d’y faire participer au chant quelques moines aux facettes métalleuses certainement trop longtemps contenues. Non, en réalité, c’est juste à s’y méprendre, mais c’est du plus bel effet et plutôt culotté (« Solid Rain »).
Mon coup de cœur restera « Sequelae », morceau éponyme. Tout y est sombre, angoissant. Une composition alliant des rythmiques Black et Death et se développant harmonieusement sur des accords gracieux à souhait laissant la place à de beaux moments de mélancolie. Là encore et je tiens à y revenir, le chant Death y est très agréable parce que beaucoup plus guttural et de fait mieux maîtrisé.
Plus fort d’une assurance acquise avec les épreuves, CORKAGE nous balance au fil des notes un genre atypique et c’est très humblement que Fabien (guitare) m’en a d’ailleurs parlé. Toujours dans un souci d’extrême modestie, ils ne m’auront à aucun moment fait l’apanage de leur galette. C’est donc sans influence que j’ai parcouru cette dernière avant d’en multiplier les écoutes pour m’en imprégner entièrement.
Constat : sans artifices, accessible, originale, tout bonnement à l’image de ceux qui la composent et la mettent en notes.
