On lit dans la pochette de Masterpiece Of The Absurd comme dans un livre ouvert. Pardonnez-moi cette introduction un peu brutale, mais j'ai les pupilles en feu. De tous temps, les groupes de Metal ont toujours fait preuve d'une imagination débordante pour leurs artworks. La vie et la mort, le bien et le mal, le feu et la glace, les couleurs chaudes et froides sont autant d'éléments qu'on retrouve avec récurrence dans les bacs et qui attirent irrémédiablement l'œil. DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, BRING ME THE HORIZON, MEKONG DELTA, TAROT, STRATOVARIUS sont passés par ces choix artistiques, non sans succès. Alors quand le groupe français UNSAFE nous illustre son homme moderne, tiraillé entre la quiétude de Mère Nature et le feu brulant des pétrodollars, on ne peut s'empêcher de penser à un discours forcément bien pensant et forcément aussi un peu politisé.
En ce qui me concerne, je ne connaissais UNSAFE ni d'Eve, ni d'Adam et qu'elle fut agréable, la surprise d'entendre des français jouer un Thrash orienté Death de pareille qualité. Ce deuxième album pour les Limougeauds vient apparemment adouber Stéphanie au poste de frontwoman, elle qui officiait déjà au sein du groupe depuis un moment. Chanteuse lyrique ? Que nenni ! Angela Gossow en puissance ! Chant rocailleux et guttural, timbre caverneux et coffre puissant, voilà ce qui caractérise au mieux ses vocalises. C'est bien évidement efficace, mais ça ne serait pas aussi impressionnant si ses petits copains n'assuraient pas derrière. Je vais être franc, j'avais un mauvais pressentiment sur ce disque. Avec la pochette tape-à-l'œil, les titres de chansons prétentieux, tout ça me paraissait trop visuel pour être qualitatif. Plutôt deux fois qu'une, "Revolution" m'a remis sur le séant avec son Thrash pugnace au leitmotiv facilement mémorisable, le tout enrobé d'une batterie inarrêtable. C'est un peu ce qui nous attend au fil des compositions, un Metal ultra-couillu et qui tranche terriblement avec la finesse de l'artwork. Aussi, quand on entend parfois dès solis très "nordiques", des odeurs nauséabondes de Death technique et les gargarismes incessants de Stéphanie, comment ne pas effectuer un rapprochement évident avec ARCH ENEMY ? Il est vrai que les points communs sont parfois troublants mais pour autant, veillons à ne pas mettre tous les œufs dans le même panier. A l'écoute d'une composition comme "Fire !" et de son final plutôt inattendu avec une combinaison maline entre basse vrombissante et samples, on comprend qu'UNSAFE cherche surtout à sortir des clivages. Et aux moments où, malgré eux, les français se rapprochent le plus des suédois, comme c'est le cas sur "Blockhead Nations" qui ressemble à s'y méprendre au "Blood On Your Hands", l'exécution est tellement précise qu'on croit volontiers à un hommage plutôt qu'à un plagiat. En contrepartie, il faut aussi avouer que le groupe n'a pas inventé l'eau chaude et que les derniers morceaux tournent un peu en rond. Autrement dit, le tour du personnage a été fait depuis belle lurette et on sait pertinemment que plus grand-chose de nouveau ne peut nous arriver.
Ceci étant, on ressort quand même de ce voyage relativement satisfaits et agréablement surpris par la qualité d'un combo dont on ne soupçonnait pas le talent une heure auparavant. Mais surtout, on peut sans vergogne être chauvins, car UNSAFE est un arbre luxuriant profondément enraciné dans un sol français et qui ne demande qu'à s'épanouir davantage. Et comme la mode est à l'écologie et à la défense de notre patrimoine naturel, on ne peut qu'espérer qu'il fasse un beau chêne centenaire.
