Avec un nom volontairement politisé et une pochette pas moins suggestive, il était presque certain que les brésiliens de RED FRONT allaient attaquer leur premier album le couteau entre les dents. Pourtant, le quintette ne sort pas de la jungle, puisque c’est de Sao Paulo, capitale culturelle, commerciale et industrielle du Brésil, dont sont originaires nos amis. Les gagnants du Wacken Metal Open Air Battle de Sao Paulo, qui ont enchainé avec une tournée européenne aux côtés de DESTRUCTION, s’il vous-plait, mettent visiblement le paquet pour promouvoir un premier album extrêmement bien noté par la presse spécialisée. Paru en novembre 2010 via Neckrusher Records, un label créé par le groupe lui-même, Memories Of War gravit avec plus ou moins de succès la première marche vers la reconnaissance de ses pairs.
La désolation est bel est bien l’objet de l’intro, « Welcome To Chaos ». Sirènes, hurlements, tirs de mitraillettes, explosions, c’est une guérilla urbaine qu’a voulu nous représenter RED FRONT. Cette même violence se retrouve entièrement sur les différentes pistes, qui mettent en exergue un Thrash Metal belliqueux, plein de revendications, teinté de riffs Death et de tempos Punk. Malgré un dynamisme positif et une violence non réfrénée (« Killer »), le début de l’album reste relativement lisse et inoffensif. On sent que les mecs se tâtent encore un peu et proposent des compositions relativement faciles, sans grandes prises de risques. Léo, le chanteur, possède un timbre rugissant mais encore trop timide pour ne pas être inexpressif. C’est assez effrayant de l’entendre distinctement manquer de souffle et reprendre des bouffées d’oxygène sur le final de « Disaster ». RED FRONT propose souvent les mêmes rythmes, avec une batterie tribale à demi-mots et une basse qui suit la cadence poliment mais peine à imposer des idées différentes. Tout ça donne une grande sensation de linéarité. Quelques samples, solos ou variations rythmiques viennent timidement apporter un peu de fraicheur (« Institutions Down ») mais c’est véritablement la seconde moitié de Memories Of War qui sera la plus instructive. On observe déjà une mouvance plus Hardcore à partir de « Just A Game » mais c’est sur la mid-tempo « Get Out Here » que les paulistinos se montrent le plus à leur avantage. En dépit d’une accélération inévitable qui sonne comme forcée en bout de course, RED FRONT persévère dans son ralentissement avec « Self Flagellation », une démonstration de Thrash & Roll, catchy à mort et qui suscite un net regain d’intérêt. Ces garçons sont tout à fait capables de s’exprimer sans mettre les pieds dans une purée granuleuse et difficile à déglutir. Dommage qu’ils aient choisi de privilégier les riffs classiques mais péniblement exécutés d’un Thrash traditionnel aux guitares lourdes et groovys d’un Crossover, certes plus accessible mais terriblement plus agréable.
Memories Of War possède donc deux facettes bien distinctes. La première, celle qui vous saute aux yeux et aux oreilles, montre un énième groupe de Thrash brésilien, qui peine à sortir de la masse sur album, avec un Thrash basique et des thèmes redondants. La deuxième, celle qu’on découvre en écoutant attentivement, en creusant un peu, révèle un énième groupe de Thrash brésilien doué, capable de belles choses quand il maitrise son trop-plein d’émotions. A vous de choisir votre camp.
