Treize ans de carrière et sixième album longue durée pour les italiens de LACUNA COIL. Et quel parcours, quels progrès accomplis depuis le premier EP éponyme…
Du gentil amateurisme teinté d’ambition flagrante, le sextette a fini par évoluer vers un professionnalisme qui force le respect, et c’est le terme le plus idoine qui me vient à l’esprit à l’écoute de cette nouvelle livraison, Dark Adrenaline.
Avec un son parfait et poli, des arrangements discrets mais parfaitement au service des compositions, et des musiciens en place et carrés, je ne vois vraiment pas quoi reprocher à ce LP qui inaugurera la nouvelle année de la meilleure des façons pour nos amis transalpins.
Alors j’entends déjà les esprits chagrins égrener leur litanie la larme à l’œil… Oui, c’est propre. Oui rien ne dépasse. Oui, quelque part, tout est formaté pour plaire au plus grand dénominateur commun. Mais peut on reprocher à un groupe de courir après le succès, peut on lui reprocher de gommer toutes les aspérités pour ne pas heurter les oreilles sensibles ?
Non. Car il est normal que quinze ans après sa création, un ensemble musical ne désire qu’une chose. L’adhésion massive. Qui n’est aucunement synonyme dans ce cas de trahison, ou je ne sais quel autre pêché mortel contre l’authenticité.
Car Dark Adrenaline suscite l’enthousiasme en bien des occasions.
Ne serait ce que pour son titre d’ouverture, ample comme les ailes d’un albatros au dessus de l’océan, et méchant comme un requin qui renifle le sang. Déjà envoyé en éclaireur il y a quelques temps, « Trip The Darkness » est la plus parfaite illustration de ce que LACUNA COIL a à proposer en 2012. Un Metal énorme, porté par deux voix complémentaires, et soutenu par des riffs sombres et exubérants.
Et même si la voix de Cristina prend parfois des intonations bien connues d’Amy Lee, ça n’est que pour mieux moduler quelques instants après et affirmer sa propre personnalité.
Et les guitares ne se gênent pas non plus pour occuper l’espace et obliger leur chanteuse à donner le meilleur d’elle-même, notamment sur les morceaux les plus agressifs, symbolisés à merveille par l’impeccable « Intoxicated », durant laquelle les riffs jouent souvent à cache-cache avec le Thrash…
Mais LACUNA sait aussi se faire entraînant, comme le prouvent « The Army Inside » et son up tempo débridé, ou encore « Against You » et son couplet irrésistible qui finit par retomber sur un refrain plombé. Et même si la majorité des titres privilégient le mid tempo écrasant, ceci pour mieux mettre en avant une paire de six cordistes qui savent accoucher des licks les plus accrocheurs, l’ennui ne vient jamais pointer le bout de son nez, grâce à des constructions simples, mais toujours bourrées de petites trouvailles qui font rebondir l’ensemble.
La reprise du « Losing My Religion » de REM est aussi particulièrement bien sentie, et se démarque de l’original sans lui manquer de respect. Aussi transfigurée que fidèle, la mélodie initiale subit un traitement en profondeur, au point qu’on a l’impression par moments d’écouter une chanson originale des italiens, ce qui constitue un joli tour de force !
Dark Adrenaline est donc un succès de plus à mettre à l’actif de LACUNA COIL, groupe qui n’a jamais vraiment déçu. Ce nouvel effort est une vraie démonstration du talent des italiens, décidément très inspirés au moment de composer des hymnes qui s’incrustent irrémédiablement dans votre cerveau, pour peu que vous soyez réceptifs à leur musique.
A voir en live à l’occasion de leur prochaine tournée, impérativement !
