ESKIMADA, voilà un groupe qui sur le papier, à l’air solidement enraciné dans l’Italie profonde. Mais à y regarder de plus près, ces quatre macaronis, et je dis ça en toute affection, débarquent d’Olbia en Sardaigne, à quelques cinquante kilomètres à vol d’oiseau de notre chère Corse. Et je ne sais pas vous, mais ce détail m’a fait voir le groupe d’un œil différent. C’est pas tous les jours qu’on peut se taper un album sarde alors tâchons de donner à cette belle île, pas forcément réputée pour sa musique Rock, des conseils avisés en la matière. Que faut-il vraiment retenir de cette sortie ? En vérité, très peu de choses. ESKIMADA s’est formé en juillet 2007 et a mis quatre années à sortir son premier album éponyme. Le détail le plus significatif sur eux est peut-être que j’ai renoncé à me battre pour trouver ne serait-ce que la date de sortie de cet opus. Je ne sais pas si c’est volontaire ou juste je-m’en-foutiste mais en tout cas, ESKIMADA semble trouver son efficacité dans la discrétion.
Discrétion, à l’image de cette œuvre qui ne fera pas beaucoup de bruit. La faute premièrement à un gros manque d’ambition qui se traduit en musique par des compositions un peu tristounettes et faciles d’accès. Et ça m’a foutu en rogne parce que putain, ces petits gars ont la pêche, la maitrise technique mais ils ont surtout un joli poil (ou plutôt un chêne centenaire) qui pousse au creux de leur main et qui les empêche d’exploser. On tombe facilement en amour pour ce Crossover de qualité, un peu comme si on connaissait le groupe personnellement et qu’on n’osait pas leur dire que ce sont de grosses feignasses. Il parait qu’ESKIMADA a débuté en tant que groupe de Rock influencé par le Metal. A l’écoute profonde de ces dix chansons, c’est plutôt l’inverse. FAITH NO MORE a probablement été le déclic pour eux, appuyé par les vieilles performances de KORN, INCUBUS, DEFTONES et autres DISTURBED. L’omnipotence d’Enzo Di Ciaccio derrière sa basse et au micro pour les vocaux plus grognons fait plaisir à entendre. Il dynamise à lui seul la musique du combo, lui apporte le groove propre au Crossover et la paire de couilles hirsutes qu’on aime retrouver quand certains passages efféminés pointent le bout de leur nez (« My Will Be Done »). Tout ça reste très sage, très révérencieux pourtant, il en faut peu pour jeter le pavé dans la mare, comme sur un « Lilium » à la violence disproportionnée. Ce Metal à tendances contemporaines, grandement influencé par le Rock alternatif des années 2000, le Punk ou le Néo évolue avec une retenue incompréhensible, matérialisée par de pseudos-interludes romantiques (« And Let The Innocence Dream ») et par les vocaux clairs et nasillards de Raffaele Pibiri. Une chose est sûre, ESKIMADA accroche sa cible mais ne la fait pas fondre de plaisir. « Angelica » fera taper du pied, « By Stars Revealed » rappellera sans doute les efforts passés de STAIND avec ce refrain tiptop mais dans sa globalité, cette rondelle laisse un arrière-goût teinté d’amertume et d’inachevé.
Combien de fois aura-t-on flanqué un groupe de l’adjectif « intéressant » ? Alors pour déroger un peu à la règle, je dirais qu’ESKIMADA est un combo italien… intéressant. Décidemment, il n’y a pas d’autres mots qui soient plus à même de les qualifier. Les italiens laissent derrière eux un joli lot de promesses mais surtout un paquet de regrets, donnant la fâcheuse impression de prendre leur art beaucoup trop à la légère.
