Vous en voulez encore, du Hardcore fougueux et bon marché pour ado écervelé ? Du Hardcore mélodique avec des vrais morceaux de chant clair dedans ? Du Hardcore policé qui fait du touche-pipi avec les groupes les plus scintillants de la scène Punk / Emo nord-américaine (FALL OUT BOY, PANIC ! AT THE DISCO, SIMPLE PLAN) ? Alors CLOSE YOUR EYES est fait pour vous. N’espérez rien d’autre de ces texans qui, même s’ils sortent parfois les riffs parpaings et les grosses voix, sont doux comme des agneaux. Avec leur premier effort, We Will Overcome sorti en février 2010 sur Victory Records (tout un symbole), les américains ont mis les deux pieds dans le plat. Explications.
En voulant jouer des coudes au cœur d’une scène qui ne jouit pas d’une très bonne réputation, CLOSE YOUR EYES ne se démarque que comme un copycat kitchissime qui reprend les bonnes vieilles méthodes éculées d’A DAY TO REMEMBER et d’EMAROSA. La volonté de plaire, d’être coiffé le mieux possible est palpable. Les texans s’habillent des refrains les plus accrocheurs, les plus putassiers pour imbiber leur public, le tout enrobé dans des lignes de guitares désespérément racoleuses. Tout ce champ lexical se rapporte généralement aux prostituées mais il colle parfaitement à la musique de ces garçons qui navigue à vue dans un océan d’incertitudes et d’incohérences en faisant mine de maitriser l’art de la fellation. Techniquement, c’est extrêmement léger. Mais dans leur malheur, ils ont encore de la chance. Celle de manier à peu près correctement les rythmiques effrénées propres au Punk, même si en matière de Punk très énervé, on préfèrera le « We’re All To Blame » de SUM 41 au « Digging Graves » de CLOSE YOUR EYES. L’inconstance est de mise, mais on se surprend quand même à apprécier l’une ou l’autre compo, notamment « The Body » qui commence bien mal mais se finit honorablement avec des chœurs poignants. Parmi les réussites, ne pas parler de « Song For The Broken » est un péché d’omission. Même si les paroles mièvres gâchent le plaisir, on soulignera pour la première fois les vocaux clairs de Shane Raymond qui font preuve d’une grande justesse et d’une grande efficacité, même si quelques artifices l’aident sans doute à tenir ses aigus. Tiens, en parlant des textes, aussi ai-je oublié de préciser que CLOSE YOUR EYES fait dans le Hardcore chrétien. Ce n’est pas un problème quand on ne prête pas attention aux lyrics. Dans le cas contraire, la poésie cucul la praline des texans pique les oreilles. Le temps fort de l’album étant passé, on peut alors se replonger dans la routine en reprenant l’écoute attentive de morceaux qui, s’ils se regardaient dans un miroir, ne verraient pas leur propre reflet, tant le néant les drape de la cape d’invisibilité. L’ennui intervient à partir de « Wake Up ! » et c’est vraiment la pire chose qui soit arrivée à ce disque. Autant avec de mauvaises compos, on est constamment à l’affut d’une bourde à relever, autant si l’on sait qu’il ne se passera plus rien, on décroche totalement.
We Will Overcome vous hypnotise, vous borde dans son tissu adipeux douillet et vous donnera la sensation d’être vautré dans un confort inégalable. Oui mais voilà, cette prestation est tellement sucrée qu’elle provoquera dès ses premiers instants une hyperglycémie absolument détestable. Et hélas, rares sont ceux qui aiment gober le miel à la louche. CLOSE YOUR EYES devra se montrer un peu moins prépubère à l’avenir pour séduire un public qui soit un poil plus large qu’une horde de teenagers en ébullition.
