Au cœur de ce conglomérat magmatique que représente aujourd’hui la scène Metal mélodique à chanteuse lyrique émerge lentement MINDED OF HEART. Leur tour est désormais venu et demain, un autre candidat à la reconnaissance pointera probablement le bout de son nez avant qu’un autre ne le fasse vite oublier. C’est un cycle ouvert, un tourbillon dans lequel sont happées quelques formations avant d’être purement et simplement éjectées par le système, victimes de leurs propres choix artistiques. Les groupes qui font le buzz ne le font jamais vraiment longtemps et si MINDED OF HEART a bien de quoi le faire durant un temps, ce n’est pas être particulièrement pessimiste que de leur prédire un avenir qui s’inscrit en pointillés, tant leur premier album, Trust In Your Path, sera plein de bonne volonté autant que plein de redondances.
Il n’y aura ni baffe, ni surprise, ni quoi que ce soit de croustillant tout au long de cet enregistrement dont la qualité la plus perceptible est de déborder d’envie. Les Orléanais veulent faire les choses en grand mais sans y prêter vraiment attention, virent parfois dans l’écœurant, comme une mayonnaise qui tranche en plein soleil. Stylistiquement impossible à vraiment définir à cause d’incessantes variations entre un Metal mélodique et un Death / Dark / Gothic larmoyant saupoudré de claviers Sympho pouët-pouët et d’un chant féminin particulièrement juste (il faut le souligner), MINDED OF HEART reste encore assez informe dans sa propre définition. On ne sait pas vraiment où le groupe veut nous emmener, bien qu’il nous martèle son credo avec insistance. Une chose est sûre, les français mettent le paquet sur l’aspect émotionnel des envolées vocales, de la dualité entre chant féminin clair et chant masculin guttural, des solos qui libèrent de bonnes ondes et d’introductions qui versent dans un Metal épique remarquable (« Erase »). Les parties les plus musicales, lardées de nappes de claviers presque orchestrales sont généralement bien pensées et entrainantes. Par contre, j’ai un gros problème avec les couplets qui se reposent inexorablement sur un riffing bateau et deux-trois pirouettes vocales qui donnent une franche impression de déjà entendu. MINDED OF HEART concentre ses efforts dans les refrains et dans un jeu de guitare assez lourd. Seulement, ça ne marche pas à tous les coups puisque sur 14 créations, une bonne moitié ne véhicule que très peu de choses, n’attirant l’oreille que sur de petits détails. Pour peu que vous ne soyez pas très réceptifs au genre pratiqué, un visiteur assez malveillant viendra frapper à votre porte peu avant la fin de cette œuvre. Son nom ? Monsieur Ennui. Pour ma part, le décrochage a eu lieu après l’énergique « Where Am I » qui a le mérite de secouer un peu ces rythmiques hypnotisées par un constant mouvement de balancier, et ce malgré une production assez faiblarde qui étouffe totalement les grognements d’Alodys. En dépit d’excellentes idées qu’il serait classieux de ne pas leur enlever, on ne voit pas vraiment comment les Orléanais pourraient être promus dans la division supérieure, surtout que ce Trust In Your Path peine à accrocher les oreilles les plus volontaires, et ce malgré une jolie balade (« If I Try ») et quelques interludes passe-partout.
Définitivement, je crois que cet album conviendra particulièrement à une frange d’auditeurs qui se plait dans la recherche de nouvelles formations lyriques et qui soutiennent le « produire française ». Eux sauront probablement mieux que moi déguster ce mets délicat avec la finesse qui se doit. Aujourd’hui, en compagnie de MINDED OF HEART, je me voyais plutôt comme un éléphant qui a tenté de visiter une cristallerie Baccarat.
