Mode gros faux-cul on : UNFRAGMENT, voilà un retour qui fait bien plaisir ! C’est que ces petits français nous avaient manqué depuis leur second opus, Vices And Verses. C’était il y a six ans, c’est fou comme le temps passe vite ! Mode gros faux-cul off. Que voulez-vous ? Il faut bien parfois faire croire qu’on connaît le sujet, même si à l’époque, j’étais plutôt à fond dans la période RAMMSTEIN. On m’a dit qu’il n’est jamais trop tard pour bien faire et qu’on n’acquiert qu’à la longue le goût pour le Death Metal. Alors en ce début d’année 2012, peut être est-il justement trop tard pour porter un jugement objectif sur six années de silence et un début de carrière qui ne me concernait pas encore. Mais avec leur troisième album, Testament, nos amis d’UNFRAGMENT font l’erreur de nous donner matière à commenter. Et effectivement, il y a des choses à dire concernant cet OVNI de la scène extrême française.
Je le laissais déjà entendre dans ma chronique de Vices And Verses, ces garçons n’ont pas pris une ride. Antoine a rejoint la horde à la guitare, portant le nombre de musiciens à 4, pendant que Fabien continue de s’occuper de la programmation de la boite à rythmes. Jerôme Viel a pris la basse jusqu’alors tenue par Antonio Michot. La musique, pour sa part, n’a pas non plus évoluée de façon drastique, toujours solidement enracinée dans un sol fertile, où pousse une végétation luxuriante. Avec cet album, plus encore qu’avec le précédent, les français nous brinquebalent du côté de la Scandinavie, avec les mêmes références inépuisables que sont ENTOMBED, UNLEASHED et, pour changer un peu, AT THE GATES. Bien sûr, toutes ces élucubration, ces énumérations primaires relèvent de l’anecdote, car on pourrait citer une bonne centaine de groupes sans pour autant aboutir sur aucune forme de concordance. La vérité, si vous voulez des références, c’est qu’UNFRAGMENT occupe une partie de cette scène française, qui produit un Death de qualité et qui surclasse ses homologues européens. RECUEIL MORBIDE, OFFENDING, TORTURED SOUL, BENIGHTED, tels sont nommés ses compagnons de chambrée. On n’est pas ici dans l’étalage technique qui débouche sur une contre-productivité artistique. On est dans la moelle du Death Metal qui tartine les oreilles avec ses riffs piquants, ses voix gutturales qui délivrent une poésie en bon français. Il n’y a toujours pas de chichis, tout juste un sample un peu coquin sur « Extase ». Le reste est un monceau infect de bestialité qui aurait bien besoin d’un coup de déodorant. Un brin de mid-tempo par-ci par-là, un cheveu de Brutal Death qui revient de temps en temps se poser sur la soupe mais toujours, et ça n’a pas bougé d’un iota, une férocité et une puissance dévastatrice dans les compositions, qui n’explorent pas cinquante univers différents. Peut-être trop bien établi dans son confort, ce Death possède pour le moment les ressources naturelles pour s’auto-renouveler. Attention néanmoins, non pas aux « Dysfonctionnement Des Barrières Immatérielles », mais à une forme d’épuisement qui se fait jour dans les derniers instants. UNFRAGMENT semble tirer un peu la langue au cours des ultimes longueurs et ferait bien d’effectuer quelques exercices d’étirement après cette grosse séance qui tablait beaucoup sur le travail physique.
La réjouissance ici est comparable au plaisir ressenti en ayant achevé son premier marathon après des années d’inactivité. Les Français sont toujours au top et ne donnent pas l’impression de s’être laissé aller à l’engraissement. Ni rouillé, ni décousu, Testament est un troisième full-lenght éminemment réussi qui fera boire la fontaine de Jouvence aux vieux ronchons qui se promènent dans ces pages.
