On aura essayé de les convaincre qu’on ne voulait plus d’eux. On aura vainement tenté de leur faire comprendre que le Death, quand il est policé, trouve rarement écho et qu’une reconversion au sein d’un conservatoire n’avait rien d’une piteuse fin de carrière. Mais LAY DOWN ROTTEN est tenace. Un nouvel album des allemands, c’est comme une vieille rengaine, un rituel qui ressemble fort à une éclipse de soleil. Personne n’en a rien à faire mais de temps en temps, il parait qu’il y en a une. Parfois on la voit mais la plupart du temps, on n’est pas très bien placé. C’était le cas il y a trois ans avec l’anecdotique Gospel Of The Wretched, rebelote en 2012 avec Mask Of Malice. Et si par malheur, la Terre s’arrêtait de tourner le 21 décembre, il restera au moins une trace d’une absence que personne ne remarquera.
Le constat est aussi amer que difficile, mais ce sixième full-lenght est probablement le meilleur travail jamais réalisé par nos amis teutons. Attention, ce n’est pas comme s’ils avaient vu la Sainte-Vierge ou qu’ils étaient soudainement frappés de l’Esprit-Saint. Non, c’est juste légèrement moins monolithique que dans le passé. Le temps qui passe aidant à une production proprette, on ne s’étonnera finalement de rien, si ce n’est du fait que cet opus est le plus court depuis leur Cold Constructed de 2005, tant l’expérience parait interminable. Alors que le précédent effort avait déjà interpellé à cause de sa linéarité, Mask Of Malice est juste alarmant de politesses, de révérences, de savoir-vivre et de discrétion. La vénération de l’image du Death Metal est poussée à son paroxysme par des garçons qui lui accordent un nombre incalculable de courbettes. Incapable de s’affranchir, incapable de passer la seconde, incapable de placer un mot plus haut qu’un autre, LAY DOWN ROTTEN vit sa vie de vieux garçon replié sur lui-même et c’est bien triste. Pourtant, son Death n’aurait besoin que d’une étincelle pour véritablement décoller, parce qu’ils ont la qualité de leur défaut majeur : l’authenticité. Lorgnant souvent sur le vieux Death scandinave, envoyant des murs de riffs en béton armé et sublimant une voix gutturale très hermétique, cette musique pas vraiment spontanée n’en demeure pas moins truffée de générosité. Les cassures rythmiques sont rares mais bien senties, comme sur l’éponyme. Les solos aussi ont une belle liberté d’expression. Mais tout est enfermé dans un cocon de conformisme et c’est au moment où ils se laissent aller à l’innovation d’un pattern plus groovy, d’un riff plus malicieux que LAY DOWN ROTTEN commet l’erreur de ne surtout pas trop en faire et de vite retomber sur ses pattes. Comme s’ils avaient peur de vendre l’âme du Death au diable au détour d’un blast un peu moins synthétique que les autres. Et puisqu’il faut bien leur laisser quelque chose, pourquoi ne pas leur reconnaître le ratio créativité-efficacité le plus faible jamais entendu ? Les amateurs de Death bête et méchant trouveront encore quelques fibres animales autour de cette carcasse décharnée.
Je regrette de n’avoir pas pu parler d’autre chose que de leur manque d’initiative mais à un moment, et après ces quatre derniers albums qui ont la curieuse manie de tous se ressembler, LAY DOWN ROTTEN ne laisse plus vraiment le choix que d’appuyer là où ça fait mal. Il n’y a pas que les métalleux qui remarqueront le pot-aux-roses. Ainsi je laisserais la conclusion de ce papier à mon père, qui a dit très spontanément en entrant dans la pièce que « ce qu’il y a de bien avec ce disque, c’est que c’est toujours pareil, tu pourras pas te tromper dans la note ». Voilà bien un point de convergence.
