Les blagues belges ? Oui, typique de l’humour réducteur et caricatural des français… Pas très drôle tout ça. On a enterré Michel Leeb, ignoré les Grosses Têtes, alors autant s’en contenter.
Pourtant moi, j’en connais une pas vraiment amusante.
C’est l’histoire d’un super groupe, au parcours impeccable, qui se permet de sortir en 1997 un des albums les plus captivants du moment. Singles imparables, variété des compos, chanteur fabuleux, tout était OK pour une conquête de l’Europe, et pourtant, plouf…
Le canard ?
Non, le groupe. Split inexplicable, gâchis immense et incompréhension des fans, de plus en plus nombreux. Rideau, avec une chute carrément pas marrante du tout.
Et puis quatorze ans sans nouvelles.
Jusqu’à cette résurrection inopinée. En 2011.

Vous vous souvenez de Unsafe ? Et surtout, du monumental Black Fuel ?
Et bien Feed’em With A Brick est un parfait condensé des deux. Produit par Logan « Kangaroo » Mader (ex….plein de groupes majeurs….), l’album du come-back possède un son digne, clair, puissant, qui en jette sans tomber dans le Metal de superette. Au rayon nouveauté, saluons aussi l’arrivée de Mikey Doling (fondateur des légendaires SNOT et ex SOULFLY… Mais qui n’a pas joué dans SOULFLY en fait ??) à la guitare, venant épauler le trio d’origine, Phil B, Tino De Martino, et bien sur, l’extraordinaire vocaliste Franky De Smet Van Damme, qui est au chant puissant ce que son homologue casseur de briques est à la rhétorique confuse.
Et une fois de plus, Franky prouve qu’il n’a rien perdu de sa superbe en survolant cet effort de ses cordes vocales parfaitement bien huilées. Ses intonations ne sont d’ailleurs pas sans rappeler celles d’un certain John Bush, et lorsque la musique du quatuor s’égare sur les chemins autrefois empruntés par ANTHRAX, nous ne sommes jamais loin du mimétisme (« Hammerhead » et son riff habilement subtilisé au « Inside Out » des ex thrasheurs).
Parlons de guitare justement. Les licks partent un peu à droite, un peu à gauche, suintant à l’occasion de la même sueur que CORROSION OF CONFORMITY époque Deliverance (« Hot Summer »), ou du GZR premier volume (« Guns Of Navarone »), avant de revenir une fois de plus vers ANTHRAX (« Electric Showdown » qui rappelle au fil des notes pas mal de morceaux de Stomp 442…).
Des emprunts ? Non, parlons plutôt d’influences communes, de background difficile à oublier…Et de toute manière qui peut se targuer en 2012 de ne pas naviguer dans des flots déjà souvent fendus ?
Personne, et CHANNEL ZERO le sait mieux que quiconque. Impossible pour eux de revenir sur le devant de la scène en trahissant leur passé pour plaire au plus grand nombre, et Feed’em With A Brick en est la meilleure preuve. Et comme le dit si bien Francky, « My freedom, is the only thing you can’t control ».
Et il a raison le bougre. Car le ZERO n’a pas oublié quel groupe inspiré il fut par le passé, et a su retenir le meilleur de sa carrière des 90’s pour revenir encore plus fort aujourd’hui. Les titres majeurs ne manquent pas, et ce fabuleux mélange de puissance et de mélodie est toujours là, aussi équilibré que par le passé. « In The City », alternant la poudre et le parfum, « War Is Hell » et ses couplets aussi lourds qu’une charge de Panzer, le délicat « Ocean » rappelant parfois le SAB’ le plus mélodique, ou même tiens, pourquoi pas, le lancinant « Side Lines », louchant légèrement du côté d’ALICE IN CHAINS tout en évoquant l’esprit de l’immortel « Call On Me ».
Mais n’omettons pas de signaler que ce nouvel album recèle en son sein de purs brûlots incendiaires, tel l’atomique « Angels Blood » jouant à cache-cache avec nos nerfs, le bien nommé mid tempo « Ammunition », ou encore la profession de foi « Freedom ».
Bien vu les gars. Du beau boulot.
Mais comment aurait il pu en être autrement ?
J’en ai vu des albatros s’écraser sur la rive, incapables de déployer leurs ailes pour rester au sommet. Et puis certains s’y échouent, avant de retrouver la force de voler, aussi haut, voire plus qu’avant. CHANNEL ZERO est de cette trempe. Et Feed’em With A Brick est la plus belle renaissance d’un phoenix qu’on croyait à terre à jamais.
