« Bonjour. Nantes est un sacré bouillon de talents, et aujourd'hui musique rime avec sueur, sang, chaos & folie ». Voilà dans quels termes les présentations sont faites entre TASTE THE VOID et Metal-Impact. Pour sûr, cette description ambitieuse n’est pas applicable à tous, et les Nantais de JUMPING JACK seront probablement touchés par ces quelques généralités. Néanmoins, il faut dire la vérité, si le côté racoleur de cette accroche peut faire sourire, on trouve effectivement dans la musique de TASTE THE VOID sueur, sang, chaos et folie, dans des quantités plus ou moins variables. Le chaos est mieux représenté que la folie pendant que la sueur et le sang se mélangent à proportions égales. Cette joyeuse tambouille laborantine est le précieux nectar qui s’évacue des pores de Sun’s Heat, un deuxième essai concluant pour un quatuor fortement branché chemises à carreaux et Post-Whatever-Core.
Ces garçons sont des artistes, ça se voit. Et comme tous les artistes qui se respectent, ils vivent dans un monde parallèle. Certains y côtoient des licornes qui galopent sur des arcs-en-ciel en faisant des cacas-papillons, d’autres n’y voient que l’intérêt du lugubre, de la destruction, de la décadence, dans un océan de noirceur et dans une ambiance moisie. Avec son Post-Hardcore un peu apocalyptique, je vous laisse deviner dans quel mirage boit TASTE THE VOID. Comme à chaque fois que débarque un groupe avec ce type de revendications, je vous recommande d’attacher vos ceintures. A l’instar d’un BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL, ces garçons s’épanouissent à créer des morceaux qui sont les miroirs d’âmes torturées, poussées dans des retranchements extrêmes et matérialisées de façon très expressive. Rien de révolutionnaire. Des cadences pachydermiques, l’ombre d’un mauvais groupe de Doom qui rôde, des petites pauses mimi tout plein et un damné au micro. Et après ? Après, il y a l’art et la manière. TASTE THE VOID est un groupe intense, qui use d’une formule très classique et qui, sachant très bien que ce classicisme ne leur autorise aucun écart de conduite, mise tout sur l’expression d’une douleur. Psychédélique autant que schizophrénique, Sun’s Heat a de quoi s’installer confortablement dans le paysage Post-Hardcore français. Il a tous les critères de fraicheur pour décrocher le label qualité. Usant jusqu’à la corde, complexe dans ses structures, audacieux mais néanmoins respectueux, il n’est pas une incroyable surprise mais plutôt un modèle du genre. Mixé par Amaury Sauvé (AS WE DRAW), il dispose d’une production un chouia dégueulasse qui sied plutôt bien à ces riffs baveux et à cette austérité très… budgétaire, puisque c’est l’expression à la mode. Tombant parfois dans l’épique avec le final de « Between Walls » ou dans l’expéditif avec un « With Grace » d’une minute trente, cet EP plein de relief est idéal pour introduire TASTE THE VOID à l’échelon national, en espérant qu’il soit sensible à cette prestation haute en couleurs, mais désespérément terne.
Jouant sur la corde sensible plus que sur la démonstration technico-technique, ces Nantais ont un potentiel déjà affirmé et un caractère bien trempé. Ces mecs qui semblent tragiquement coupés de toute réalité ont le mérite de jouer des coudes au cœur d’une scène éminemment complexe et chargée en talents. Avec un deuxième effort tellement proche des conventions mais tellement loin de tout sentiment de félicité, TASTE THE VOID réussi un pari fort osé. C’est une averse qui ternit une journée radieuse.
