Incroyable mais vrai: il existe en Sibérie quelques rares endroits où la bière ne gèle pas. Originaires d'Omsk, les 4 jeunes Metalheads de TARANTULO nous le prouvent en réchauffant notre hiver à l'aide d'un Metal incandescent. Car si leur isolement géographique et la nullité achevée de leur patronyme risquent de ralentir leur ascension, la musique, elle, joue en leur faveur.
Le groupe se revendique d'influences diverses et plutôt rétro allant de BLACK SABBATH à BIOHAZARD en passant par les GUNS et METALLICA. Mais dès le premier morceau, une dominante Hardcore apparaît nettement et ne se démentira pas ensuite malgré la grande variété des morceaux. Le son de guitare, très lourd et accordé très bas épaulé par une basse surpuissante mais volontiers groovy, les aboiements rauques du vocaliste, la batterie rentre-dedans évoquent un MUSHROOMHEAD débarrassé de ses synthés et de ses passages chantés. Bref, ça envoie du bois, mais pas seulement. Dès le deuxième morceau, nos sibériens s'offrent un break mélodique (mais pas chanté) porté par une guitare solo d'un coup moins agressive. Le solo en question n'a rien de brillant mais démontre une volonté d'aller au-delà du simple bourrinage. « Coneranchozzz », troisième titre, se révèle encore plus ambitieux avec ses presque 8 minutes au compteur et ses nombreuses digressions autour d'un riff de guitare slide que n'aurait pas renié le Tommy Victor de la grande époque. Tout simplement excellent et d'une maturité rarissime pour un premier album. Mais que les pogoteurs fous se rassurent: TARANTULO embraye directement sur deux minutes de martelage intensif le temps d'un « Rejected » aussi primaire que récréatif. Et non, ce n'est pas un de ces albums qui démarrent sur les chapeaux de roue pour s'essouffler après quelques minutes ! Chaque appui sur la pédale de frein se paye illico par un pied au plancher qui vous colle au siège, et ceci jusqu'à la fin d'un opus dont la qualité demeure constante. Chaque titre possède une identité propre, ce qui permet de s'approprier l'album très rapidement tout en appréciant le vaste panel d'influences du combo. Et comme la production, aux standards U.S., fait plus qu'assurer, il ne me reste qu'à vous recommander chaudement ce petit groupe venu du froid.
Souhaitons que les ventes de ce premier album leur permettent de passer à l'ouest... au moins le temps d'une tournée.
