La pochette de Seven Bells a quelque chose de fascinant. De beau et dangereux à la fois. Et SECRETS OF THE MOON n’aurait pas pu trouver meilleure illustration pour dépeindre sa dernière offrande. Le précédent effort, Privilegivm (2009) avait déjà marqué les esprits, SECRETS OF THE MOON enfonce le clou tout en affirmant sa personnalité unique : si le combo allemand provient sans aucun doute du Black Metal à l’état pur (le EP The Exhibitions, en 2005, contenait même une reprise du « Under A Funeral Moon » de DARKTHRONE), il aime à le caresser tendrement, le ralentir à outrance, à la frontière parfois du Doom, mais avec cette noirceur malsaine et infâme propre au sombre Metal.
Chaque morceau de Seven Bells, évidemment, débute par un son de cloche qui résonne comme l’annonce d’une longue et lugubre cérémonie. Et une fois que sonne le glas, SECREST OF THE MOON peut s’adonner à ses plaisirs … Epicer ses vociférations d’arpèges venues des ténèbres, que ce soit en guise d’introductions terrifiantes (« Seven Bells ») ou pour ajouter par instants l’odeur puante venue des Enfers (« Goathead », « Blood Into Wine ») … Alourdir son propos, puis le secouer violemment dans un élan d’hystérie comme sur cette accélération fulgurante lors de « Blood Into Wine » … Laisser place aux complaintes, ces cris désespérés, cette voix claire marquée par la douleur sur « Serpent Messiah » … Faire des infidélités au Black et plonger dans le Doom sans vergogne, le temps de quelques encarts profondément angoissants ou mélancoliques … Etendre encore et encore son discours, pour s’immiscer progressivement dans son univers à part : certains titres dépassent même les 12 minutes (« The Three Beegars »).
En dépit de toutes ces caractéristiques qui opposeraient SECRETS OF THE MOON aux fondements même du Black Metal, il paraît indéniable qu’avec Seven Bells, le terme de "Metal occulte" prend toute sa signification. Certes, la plupart des riffs n’ont que très peu de point commun avec ceux du Black Metal pur, puisque les guitares de « sG » et « Ar » sont capables de mener à mal une mélodie lancinante (« Worship », « Seven Bells »). Certes, parfois SECRETS OF THE MOON s’éloigne tellement de ses terres qu’il se rapproche de gloires éphémères (on croirait entendre Gus Chambers, Waldemar Sorychta et Dave Lombardo au sein de GRIP INC sur « Worship). Mais il se dégage de Seven Bells un « je ne sais quoi » d’obsédant, qui encourage à aller jusqu’au bout, comme un chemin de croix à accomplir seul et dans la douleur. A ce titre, « Blood Into Wine » ferait sombrer dans la démence la plus totale, entre le martèlement incessant de Thelemnar (batterie), son thème menaçant et ses guitares sifflantes. Alors que « Nyx » rend hommage à la Déesse de la Nuit (selon la mythologie grecque), avec ses lignes mélodiques plus tourmentées que sataniques, surviennent en guise d’épilogue ces longues plages planantes au clavier : ce qui aurait pu paraître dispensable ajoute à la chose une beauté mystérieuse … SECRETS OF THE MOON aime entretenir cette aura énigmatique, voire ténébreuse : ainsi les dernières secondes de « The Three Beggars », également baptisée « Satan’s Church », mettent en avant ces voix rituelles, comme un aveu passionné qui baise les pieds de la Grande Bête cornue.
Derrière Seven Bells se dissimule l’ombre d’un certain Tom G Warrior (CELTIC FROST, TRIPTYKON), qui joue le rôle de mentor auprès de SECRETS OF THE MOON depuis quelques années maintenant. Dire que sa présence n’est pas étrangère à la facette cabalistique de Seven Bells, tient du doux euphémisme. Il n’en faut pas plus pour attribuer à cet album le statut d’œuvre subtile. Après avoir écouté un tel opus, on n’entend plus les cloches sonner de la même façon …
