Ventre affamé n'a point d'oreille. Parait-il. Pourtant, voilà bien un groupe affamé qui, sans oreilles valables, n'aurait pas été capable d'une telle prouesse. LIZZARD nous vient de Limoges, terre de porcelaine, avec dans ses bagages un Rock / Metal tout aussi fragile qu'une poupée. Structuré sous la forme d'un trio, le groupe se fige en 2006, quelques semaines à peine avant la sortie de La Criée, une première démo dont Venus sera le digne EP successeur en 2008. Dès lors, tout s'enchaîne. LIZZARD ouvre pour GOJIRA, ENHANCER, LOUDBLAST, PUNISH YOURSELF et en profite pour solidifier une fanbase qui a pour porte-étendard un certain... Carmine Appice, déjà batteur pour Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, PINK FLOYD ou encore Jeff Beck. Classieux. Et paradoxalement, c'est outre-Atlantique que le trio se fait un nom, sans avoir même sorti un seul album, un contretemps aujourd'hui réparé avec ce Out Of Reach paru sous la protection de l'insatiable Klonosphère.
Autant vous prévenir de suite. Ce disque est spécial. Spécial parce qu'on ne comprend pas immédiatement son langage. Spécial parce qu'il va dans plusieurs directions différentes sans pour autant avoir de destination. Spécial parce qu'il est tellement accessible en surface et tellement inaccessible en profondeur qu'on n'a pas forcément envie de connaître ses motivations. Il s'adresse ouvertement à ceux qui aiment le Rock et le Metal. Puisque vous trainez sur ce site, par définition, il s'adresse à n'importe lequel d'entre vous. Sauf que peu l'aimeront. Trop complexe ou trop facile ou peut-être les deux, Out Of Reach est un moment scotchant. LIZZARD fait le choix de rendre sa musique percutante par le biais de structures léchées, de riffs secs, d'arrangements vibrants ("Loose Ends") et évoque pourtant les grands noms du Rock / Metal invertébré que sont les TOOL, A PERFECT CIRCLE, KING CRIMSON, CASPIAN ou CAMEL. A l'écoute de compositions viriles comme "Fakeworld" (avec ce petit quelque chose de STAIND) ou plus modérées comme "Backslide", je pense sincèrement que l'objectif du trio était d'emmener l'auditeur sur des pistes différentes afin de le déstabiliser, tout en restant profondément fidèle à des racines Rock maitrisées. Enregistré et produit à Los Angeles par le talentueux Rhys Fulber (PARADISE LOST et FEAR FACTORY ont fait appel à lui), Out Of Reach excelle dans l'art de la polyrythmie, embarquant facilement avec lui le public dans son univers torturé, pour ne pas dire écorché vif. Peu de rébellion pour pas mal de beauté, de musicalité, de moments intenses ("Across The Line"), tel est le rapport de force proposé par le trio qui peut être fier de son premier opus relativement illisible. Pour autant, on n'oublie pas que cette bonne entrée en matière demande confirmation et que si jusqu'alors, LIZZARD semble sincère dans sa musique, son répertoire l'autorise aussi à succomber aux sirènes d'un Rock plus progressif qu'il serait alors difficile d'appréhender sans se tordre un neurone. Finalement à l'image de sa pochette, ce disque est sans dessus dessous et trahit un peu la présence d'une double personnalité dont il serait prudent de se méfier.
A vrai dire, je suis incapable de dire si j'ai aimé ou pas Out Of Reach. Je me suis senti mis à l'écart sur certains moments, comme si je n'étais pas concerné par cette créativité. Et sur d'autres, je me suis senti impliqué, en vie, presque un intrus dans l'intimité de leur studio californien. Cette capacité à se dédoubler, à brouiller les pistes fait effectivement de LIZZARD un groupe passionnant qui possède son identité artistique, et ça, c'est un déjà un beau constat.
