S'il fallait un ami, une épaule pour absorber les grosses larmes de crocodile qui coulent et coulent encore, à force d'écouter et d'être déçu par le dernier album de SODOM, YUGAL serait celui-là. Je n'attendais rien d'autre qu'Epitome Of Torture cette année et peut-être que je dois me rendre à l'évidence. Illusion Of Time, sorti de l'anonymat le plus total, est suffisant pour faire oublier l'espace d'un instant cette gabegie. YUGAL, ça ressemble à une marque de café et ça réveille à peu près de la même manière. Le Metal de ces Vannetais diffuse dans l'organisme de celui qui l'écoute un doux stimulant psychotrope, issu probablement de la torréfaction d'un grand cru de Thrash avec des arômes orientaux, aussi savoureux qu'inattendus. Pourtant, après avoir jaugé la pochette et m'être dit qu'il valait peut-être mieux voir ça que d'être aveugle, je me suis laissé aller à un étrange pessimisme, un spleen pluvieux, aussi foireux que le lieu-commun météorologique qui dessert la réputation de notre belle et grande Bretagne.
Ce quintet là est un spécimen assez unique. SAMAEL, par souci d'ouverture d'esprit s'est déjà essayé avec succès à l'orientalisation de sa musique. Idem pour ORPHANED LAND, plutôt par souci de cohérence géographique. Quant au Thrash Metal, il est plus généralement en reste, sans que ça ne semble poser de problèmes aux têtes de gondole, qui servent inlassablement la même soupe froide. YUGAL est jeune, YUGAL est motivé, YUGAL sait que l'horizon est bouché et que pour s'en sortir, il va falloir montrer plus que de la simple bonne volonté. Alors ce premier EP, qui succède à la démo From Pain To Pleasure de 2011, est véritablement prenant. L'intronisation de l'éponyme se fait sans chichis, par le biais d'un riff béton et d'une batterie frénétique, servie brute par un mixage épuré. Puis l'introduction passée, on se retrouve face à un morceau qui ralentit avant de tomber dans quelque chose de vraiment écrasant, à défaut d'être supersonique. Ce genre de nuance rythmique sert parfaitement la cause de YUGAL, qui n'a finalement pas besoin de rajouter grand-chose pour se montrer plus persuasif. Les fameuses intonations arabisantes se font dans la douceur, au détour d'une furieuse accélération ("The Mad Passenger") ou dans la discrétion d'une ouverture feutrée ("Iskence"). Tout est toujours suggéré, pas imposé. D'ailleurs, si l'on écoute Illusion Of Time en ne voulant entendre qu'un simple EP de Thrash, on le fera sans que ces touches d'exotisme ne viennent altérer la perception de l'œuvre. Les Bretons ont eu, volontairement ou involontairement, la présence d'esprit de ne pas surjouer leur coup de poker, et ce malgré une instrumentale comme "Into Spirits", qui atteste de leur vision novatrice des choses. Le tableau parait idyllique et il l'est vraiment. La seule ombre concerne finalement un relatif manque de fluidité qui se réparera assurément avec le temps, les morceaux paraissant parfois hachés dans leur forme la plus Thrash.
Tout est une question de temps. YUGAL n'a pas fait le choix de l'arrêter, n'a pas voulu freiner sa progression via un album de Revival Thrash. Lovés sur leur falaise, les Bretons regardent vers l'Orient, les idées rafraichies par les embruns. Nul doute que ce projet aura besoin d'un affinage besogneux pour affirmer encore plus son caractère, mais l'espace de 28 minutes, Illusion Of Time porte sacrément bien son nom.
