MAGIC KINGDOM évolue dans les sillons fraîchement labourés du Speed Metal aux influences néo-classiques. Ce n’est pas nouveau puisqu’il est impossible de ne pas penser à RHAPSODY et même au maître Malmsteen, mais il faut reconnaître que ces Belges s’en sorte carrément bien dans un genre où l’on a tendance à entendre le pire !
Une fois passée la pompeuse intro (apparemment indispensable sur ce genre d’album) le groupe entre dans le vif du sujet avec “Tazira’s Magic Rite”, un titre mené tambour battant qui permet de révéler l’étendu des capacités techniques du combo. Hélas sur ce morceau le chant est un peu faiblard avec une mélodie d’une banalité déconcertante (“It was a time…”). Pas de quoi paniquer puisque les passages instrumentaux sont magnifiques.
Le rythme ne ralentit qu’avec “Barabas”, un remarquable mid-tempo puissant et Heavy, qui constitue à mon avis l’un des meilleurs titres de cet album.
“Flying Pyramids” ravira les fans de clavier néo-classique à la façon de Vitalij Kuprij ; quand à “Master Of Madness”, elle semble tout droit sortie des tiroirs de Malmsteen.
“Another Sun” est une ballade convenable mais pas indispensable.
“Black Magic Castle” est un instrumental très démonstratif à l’intérêt limité puisque le talent des musiciens est largement perceptible sur chaque autre titre.
L’ensemble se termine par un titre concept de 13 minutes 20 aux limites de l’opéra-rock. L’alternance des styles de chant (clair, black, lyrique) avec la participation de Sylvie Grare d’HEADLINE est une belle réussite. Bien que je sois assez imperméable à ce style de morceaux, il faut reconnaître les qualités indéniables dont il regorge. L’exercice est parfaitement maîtrisé et parvient à rivaliser sérieusement avec des œuvres plus célèbres.
Metallic Tragedy est un remarquable point de départ pour un groupe qu’il faudra incontestablement suivre de très très près.
