SUNNUDAGR (FRA) - Follow The Light (2013)

Lorsqu'on jette un rapide coup d'œil sur la scène Black Metal française, on ne met pas longtemps à s'apercevoir de sa richesse. Entre les PENSEES NOCTURNES, PESTE NOIRE, BLUT AUS NORD, NOCTURNAL DEPRESSION et j'en passe, notre belle contrée n'a pas à rougir ! Et cela est quelque part rassurant de voir de jeunes formations déterminées à lutter aux côtés de leurs congénères. SUNNUDAGR est un one-man band créé en 2013 par un gaillard affectionnant particulièrement le Metal noir. Eh bien, voilà déjà un point commun de trouvé ! C'est amusant de pouvoir écouter les travaux de personnes passionnées qui n'ont pas hésité à franchir le pas le plus dur : celui de la première production. Enfin... pas tout à fait ! Notre jeune ami a déjà œuvré dans d'autres formations. Donc autant vous dire qu'il ne part pas sans bagages. Ainsi, c'est cette démo nommée Follow The Light qui va nous tenir compagnie.
Même si cet essai dispose d'une durée bien maigrelette, il n'en faudra guère plus pour savoir où notre musicien compte tracer son chemin. Passé la petite introduction, nous sommes en présence de deux morceaux bien distincts l'un de l'autre : "Ocean Of Dreams" et "Can't Forgive Them". Si le deuxième tourne autour d'un Black Metal classique mais bien exécuté, le premier se présente comme une piste qui fait mouche. On a ici droit à une atmosphère passant du Folk au Doom, avec en prime une petite mélodie de fond bien agréable, preuve que Maelstrom connait nos péchés mignons. De plus, ce morceau étant le plus long (6 minutes), on est surpris de constater que notre hôte est plus à l'aise sur la longue durée. Et c'est tant mieux ! Même si on sent une certaine timidité dans la composition, on ne peut que saliver d'envie à l'idée d'entendre les prochains travaux du jeune homme. Que dire de plus ? Mise à part la batterie virtuelle qui désillusionne quelque peu, cette première démo se révèle être soignée et sincère. On retrouve ici la production saturée qui fait tout le charme du style, et je peux vous dire que ça fait du bien de retrouver cet esprit underground que beaucoup de groupes (et pas des moindres) ont perdu avec le temps. Espérons donc que notre blackeux en herbe confirmera nos espoirs.
Alors oui, objectivement, c'est sûr que ce projet n'est pas à la hauteur d'une grande production qui va faire un bruit monstre dans la sphère Metal. Mais en toute honnêteté, je ne pense pas que ce soit là le but de Follow The Light. Sans révolutionner le genre, SUNNUDAGR prouve qu'avec de la motivation, on peut arriver à sortir quelque chose de concret et plaisant. A lui d'approfondir la variété de ses atmosphères en proposant davantage de mélodies envoûtantes et en prenant plus de confiance (et d'audace) dans la composition. Suit la lumière mon ami !
