Folk Metal, Viking Metal, Black Metal, appelez ça comme vous voudrez pour désigner le style de FALKENBACH mais une chose est sure : après six albums, FALKENBACH reste le garant musical de l'univers singulier de son créateur, Vratyas Vakyas (son vrai nom serait Markus Tümmers). Bien qu'originaire d'Allemagne, le bonhomme a vécu quelques années en Islande et son inspiration nordique rejaillit avec excellence sur FALKENBACH (certains textes d'ailleurs sont écrits en Islandais). Depuis l'apparition de voix claires sur l'album Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty (2003), Vakyas se plaît à varier son discours, même si aujourd'hui il s'éloigne du cultissime Heralding – The Fireblade (2005) et de ses relents païens (souvenez-vous la magnifique "Heralder").
Bien qu'assisté du violon de Nikos Mavridis, Vakyas le relègue quelque peu au second plan, lui préférant ces arrangements épiques au clavier et à la guitare acoustique pour un rendu majestueux, sous couvert de voix claires magnifiques. C'est ainsi que se décline au moins la moitié de Asa ("Eweroun", "Mijn Laezt Wourd", "Vaer Stjernar Vaerdan"), d'où se dégage une mélancolie palpable et un esprit de troubadour au sens noble du terme.
Ce qui peut déranger quelque peu sur Asa, c'est l'incapacité – ou la démarche volontairement provocatrice – de Vakyas à alterner titres à ambiances Folk et/ou grandiloquentes, et titres plus extrêmes mais mélodiques. Dans le genre, l'accéléré "Wulfarweijd", le démoniaque et infernal "Bronzen Embrace", ou encore le mid-tempo "I Nattens Stilta" (du BATHORY avec quelques passages arabisants) insufflent une puissance typiquement Black où le fidèle vocaliste Tyrann se charge de vociférer à sa guise (Vakyas se charge en général des voix pures). Mais diable, pourquoi segmenter à ce point ? A aucun moment les deux facettes de FALKENBACH ne se rencontrent à la croisée des chemins. Elles s'évitent, s'opposent même, à l'exception d'un "Bluot Füer Bluot" qui vire au Black dans les dernières minutes, de façon complètement naturelle et dirait-on presque prévisible : c'est ce qui devait démanger Monsieur Vakyas. On note une brève pause acoustique lors de "Wulfarweijd", alors pourquoi ne pas avoir osé ce métissage plus souvent ? Mystère ...
Alors Asa se veut fort justement équilibré, et termine en beauté par "Ufirstanan Folk", moins mélancolique que la plupart des compositions Folk précédemment citées, revigoré par des chœurs quasi-grégoriens. Et annonçant la fin d'un voyage encore une fois dépaysant et profondément ancré dans la culture Viking. Même si l'auditeur se demandera encore une fois où Vakyas a vraiment voulu en venir. Il semblerait juste que le leader de FALKENBACH mène sa barque comme ça le chante. Tout le mérite lui en revient.
