"Nous remercions tous ceux qui achèteront l'album, nos amis, notre famille, blablabla. Et la bière, qui nous donne l'inspiration". C'est beau comme du HEMORAGY ou du TANKARD. Ceci étant, si SEPTEM arrive à la cheville de ces deux groupes avec son premier album, ce serait déjà beaucoup. Car depuis leur siège italien de La Spezia en Ligurie, le quintet n'a pas encore fait grand-chose dans sa carrière métallique, discrètement entamée avec un premier EP éponyme en 2011. Impossible d'en savoir davantage. SEPTEM fait partie de cet underground italien qui cherche à éclore depuis maintenant quelques années par le biais de labels comme Nadir Music ou Buil2kill Records, deux sortes de Klonosphères locales qui sautent sur tout ce qui bouge. Et dans le genre sautillant, le Heavy Metal de ces Italiens est sympathique. Si proche mais pourtant si loin d'un Heavy Revival comme l'orchestre une formation type KRYZEES, ce Septem aura d'autres atouts à faire valoir. Comme notamment un enregistrement confié à Tommy Talamanca, excellent guitariste avec SADIST mais piètre virtuose quand il s'agit d'évoluer en solo...
Néanmoins, la musique de SEPTEM se rapproche déjà plus du Death / Thrash d'un Above The Light que de ses loufoqueries psychédéliques récentes. Assez extrême pour un Heavy classique, avec d'étonnantes pointes de vitesses, quelques blasts, ce disque démarre dans le feu d'un "Mind Loss"qui fait plus Death mélodique que Heavy. Mais ça, c'était avant que Daniele Armanini ne l'ouvre. Son chant très épuré, un peu éraillé, n'est pas sans rappeler Tobias Sammet. D'ailleurs, les deux ont la même façon de forcer sur les aigus. Mais que les aficionados de notre chère tête blonde se rassurent, SEPTEM est simplement dans l'évocation, pas dans le plagiat. Car musicalement, derrière, il y a un autre fond. Par exemple, sur "The Stranger", quand les Transalpins marient un chant Death, un rythme Heavy et un jeu de guitare qui fait très Crabcore. Auraient-ils inventé le Heavycore ? On n'en est pas encore là, mais il y a du potentiel. Un peu plus sérieusement maintenant, si on détecte encore facilement pas mal d'approximations dans le placement vocal, dans les descentes rythmiques, dans les solos également, ce premier album est doté d'une paire de couilles suffisamment pleines pour vite nous faire oublier ces quelques aspérités. Un titre puissant mais mélodique comme "Purified (By The Pain)"est de ceux qui mettent tout le monde d'accord, sans parler des growls récurrents de Francesco Scontrini qui nappent ce Heavy d'une touche de modernité assez savoureuse. SEPTEM ne rentre pas dans le cliché du Heavy vieillissant qui dépoussière un "Breaking The Law"passé de mode. Bien au contraire. SEPTEM propose sur ce premier opus d'une belle homogénéité des titres accrocheurs, très bien écrits et vivifiants. Pour quelqu'un comme moi qui n'a pas vécu la déferlante Heavy Metal, un tel album est une alternative crédible et autrement plus contemporaine aux classiques.
Et même si c'est SEPTEM, même si ce groupe est anonyme, je vous le dis clairement. Ce disque est trop bien conçu pour qu'on passe à côté. Ceux qui sont intimement liés au feeling old-school s'y retrouveront, de même que cette nouvelle génération qui apprécie une balance équilibrée entre tradition et modernité. Ces Italiens, de ce fait, s'adressent à un public très large et c'est peut-être là leur seul véritable défaut.
