J'étais surement sceptique. Mais ça, c'était avant. Avant que je ne comprenne que cette pochette franchement inexpressive doublée du terrifiant logo "Parental Advisory Explicit Content" (qui s'applique donc à SPEED STROKE et pas à HAEMORRHAGE, va comprendre...) n'avait pas pour but ultime de vendre du rêve. Après tout, que ce soit Erik de WATAIN, Fred d'INHUMATE ou Alex Webster de CANNIBAL CORPSE, ils ont tous confessé un point commun dans leur façon d'écrire de la musique. Ils ont tous avoué cette curieuse manie de s'arracher le cœur (parfois les tripes) et de mettre tous ces charmants abats sur table. Sauf que dans le cas précis des Italiens de SPEED STROKE, l'image semble bien trop extrême pour ces gais lurons, leur truc à eux étant le Hard Rock maquillé comme une voiture volée, tapissé d'une couche de Glam et de Hard FM un brin arriviste pour nous, Français, qui avons déjà les beaux BLACKRAIN pour faire mouiller les culottes sensibles.
Quoique ce premier album éponyme sera une bonne leçon. Une bonne leçon d'humilité, de courage peut-être. Une claque, surement pas mais au moins une bonne piqûre de rappel. A défaut de pouvoir devenir les nouveaux GUNS N' ROSES, les nouveaux CRASHDÏET, SPEED STROKE prend momentanément le contrôle de l'autre côté des Alpes, ce qui n'est déjà pas une mince affaire. A grands coups de riffs so rocknrolla, de rythmes foufous, aussi bien coiffés qu'un David Coverdale au réveil, les Italiens parviennent à infuser leur Hard Rock pêchu et sexy dans les oreilles d'un auditeur forcément un peu décontenancé par tant de facilité. En vérité, ce premier album n'a rien de la purge qu'on pouvait imaginer, les Suédois et les Américains n'ayant pas le monopole de ce style intemporel. Après seulement trois ans d'existence, SPEED STROKE manie son joujou comme un grand, y compris Jack dont la voix terriblement bien foutue donne énormément de crédibilité à cet opus, allant jusqu'à rappeler un certain Jacoby Shaddix (PAPA ROACH) sur "Lookin' Down". Bon, pour être franc, c'est dans les moments les moins virils qu'on s'ennuie le plus ("Burning Heart" et "Shine" qui sont les deux balades qu'on aurait préféré éviter). Heureusement, ces instants d'une grande niaiserie sont rarissimes et au pire, feront un petit peu tâche au milieu de ces autres compositions, fraiches, aériennes, parfois sensuelles, toujours énergisantes. Tout est relativement relax, un peu sudiste ("Age Of Rock N' Roll"), un peu facile ("Sick Of You", "Trust Me, I Care"...) mais jamais franchement déplaisant. Puis avec "Speed Strokes Of Fire", les Transalpins se paient même le luxe d'une compo de saloon expéditive (puisque longue d'une centaine de secondes seulement), décalée, qui vous plongera dans un western spaghetti burlesque avec bastons à coups de Bourbon. Véritablement, sans avoir non plus l'impression de marcher sur l'eau, on va de surprise en surprise et ce Speed Stroke en deviendrait presque attachant. C'est ce sentiment qui prédomine à l'heure d'un "The Hunt" qui achève la bête en beauté. Le sentiment du devoir accompli et du travail bien fait.
Il n'en fallait finalement pas plus et ce premier opus, sous toutes ses formes, sous toutes ses coutures, est un album complet, plaisant, pas toujours inoubliable mais crédible, ce qui est loin d'être gagné quand on se lance dans ce type de Hard Rock un peu efféminé. Plus devient trop. Moins devient pas assez. SPEED STROKE est assurément une formation qui s'assume et qui n'a pas besoin de passer pour une bête de foire sur Rai Uno afin de conquérir son public. Sa sincérité s'en chargera pour lui.
